so outside of the Masters where he seems to change his voice from sportscaster to reverend

Exactly. I don't whine too much about commentators, but when Nantz gets into the schmaltzy mode as only he can, it becomes quite farcical to me. The mute button needs to be close by, and I'd rather miss insightful comments after he snaps out of that mode than have to suffer any unnecessary sentimentality.:-D

I believe the best announcers are those who played professional golf at the highest level, and can give us insights, based on their experiences.  That is why I posted about David Duval, Roger Maltbie, Brandel Chamblee, Judy Rankin, Dottie Pepper, and Frank Nobilo.  It goes without saying that the same applies to the Shark, Johnny Miller, jDavid Feherty,  and Nick Faldo.   It does NOT apply to Kelly Tilghman, Jim Nantz, Mike Tirico, and others.

There's a difference between play-by-play and analyst (or color commentator).  In most sports it's the professional broadcaster who handles the p-b-p duties and the former pro provides analysis.  Obviously, there are exceptions but in my mind, there should be 2 separate categories because their roles are so different.  Perhaps even a 3rd for studio host which is usually a mix between broadcaster and former pro, the broadcaster takes the reins and guides the former pros in the studio.  All very different so the poll to me wasn't very useful or instructive.

Good post.

I agree-it is a very good post. I actually like BOTH Jimmy and Rich. I think the latter did a GREAT job as the moderator on TGC's Special on Tiger. I am creating a separate thread on that show ("so much to do; do little time!"-from the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland).

The ESPN play by play guys are terrific, particularly SVP. It's a shame we're losing their coverage of the British. My favorite broadcast of the year, both for the volume of coverage and the quality.
