Looks like it maxes out at around 5 yards high?

Big deal. Hit into the woods enough times and you learn how to hit those.

If you have a good lie you can always take a hybrid or a 3-wood and almost pitch the ball as far as you can hit that shot. I think it's more controllable since it's a shorter and less aggressive hit. You also don't have to adjust much for the ball back in your stance.

The local pro in the US Open Chambers Bay preview did that with a 3W. Wish I saved it. It might be still there in the USO thread.
