Posting hole by hole is only really useful where you want access to the info to help improve your game or in a tournament tie where you score by countback.  Most clubs only want the total scores to be able to handicap you correctly

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

As mentioned earlier, some golfers just never seem to get the hang of ESC adjustment.  Hole by hole does it for them.

I do post hole by hole. As mentioned, it lets me not think about ESC. Also there are some statistical reports that the software lets you look at. I find those reasons enough to do it.

Pretty much. :-)

Not much that hasn't been said already.

The Kentucky Golf Association does not have any actual statistics, however they felt the number of golfers posting hole by hole was low.  A couple of reasons why it IS done.

1) The club needs data for allocating hole handicaps.

2) Younger golfers do it to accumulate stats on their game.

Posting via GHIN.com or via their smart phone app will only allow ESC scores.  If you sign up for "eGolfer" at Ghin.com you can post hole by hole as well as putts, etc.  College kids use this a lot to research their stats.  The downside, there is no starting database of course information.  The player will have to initially setup the courses they play putting in yardages, par, etc.

It was also mentioned they see more hole by hole posting via TPP (Ghins tournament program)

John

Conclusions that I see for Rulesman:

1.  reporting hole by hole is not a requirement in North America

2.  the percentage of scores reported hole by hole in North America is very low.

That is my conclusion.

I guess the friend you had the discussion with got some bad information.

It would seem so. The worrying thing is that they are either on or closely connected to the group discussing the world wide handicapping system.

The person who I talked to, who has had gone to a national meeting concerning the changes, did mention changes involving hole by hole data.  I didn't quite understand the context, as we were also talking about changes involving course ratings with the new handicap system, but I have no doubt there are going to be significant changes on this side of the pond.

Can't wait to see how long that thread will be. :~(

Boy, ain't that the truth.  If something so simple as requiring one to play with at least one other person is such a strain, what happens if they actually have to have the score attested?  It could get interesting.

The more complex the actual process becomes, the fewer people that will opt to participate in the handicap system itself.  That worries me too....

We'll have to wait and see, I really don't know what the new system will be like. I have to admit my priority or goal  would be a system that produces the most accurate handicaps possible.  If it means an extra minute at the computer, or a smaller number of rounds posted, I'm ok with it. Whatever the new system is, I hope golfers are not turned off.

I'm sure all involved are trying to come up with a "better" system.  They can always tweak it.  Been doing that with golf rules for quite a while.

John

It never stopped anyone who needed to establish a handicap back before that requirement was dropped.  Have we as Americans become so fearful of change that we would eschew getting a handicap if such a requirement was put in place?  Or have we as a society become so lazy that we can't make the small amount of effort needed to join the rest of the world.  Are we so egocentric that we will take our ball and go home if we don't get our own way?

Wow, that's gotta be way back.  When was that? I don't remember ever having to enter hole by hole.

Regardless, I don't know if it "stopped" anyone or not, but it does seems to me (just my gut feel that could certainly be wrong) that more people actually have handicaps now than did back in old "enter it in the book" day.  Maybe in part because of the ease of doing so.  Even now, as easy as it is to obtain/maintain a real hcp, we still see, even on a site like this, a lot of otherwise avid golfers who choose not to do so.  As a huge hcp system advocate (I know you are too) I just hope any added complexity doesn't drive people away from the system....or give them yet another reason to not to even start in the first place, because sadly, you're right, there's a lot of laziness out there!

As for "joining the rest of the world", I'm a big fan of a unified system, but I'm not understanding how that relates to the net esc score vs HBH entering of scores into the system.  The score, and the impact to the hcp index remains the same regardless of how it's entered.  What am I missing?

    • On the subject of teenagers in professional tournaments there is a kid (Kris Kim) who is a member of my club in England and is at my old school. He’s 16. He’s playing in the pga tour event in Texas this week. Shot 69 yesterday for T31 and is -2 today through 5 holes. T55 and on the cut line. I really hope he makes the cut. Will be awesome.    His dad I believe is a teaching pro and his mum was on the LPGA Tour for a while.
    • I have two contenders here that stick out to me: In second place, a putt to win the hole playing the 16th hole at Burnham and Berrow. Playing foursomes and the green has a big bank at the front then a flat bit and then it goes up again to a back shelf. My partner had hit our second shot onto the back shelf. We were 2up at the time and he was being a little wobbly so we didn’t want to lose the hole. Our oppo were conceded a 4 and my partner told me to just lag it down there nicely. 20 year old me meant to do that and failed. I hit it a bit hard and it was definitely going to clear the tier and probably run off the front of the green, but it hit the hole right in the middle and went in. My partner was very happy we won the hole but quite upset at my ability to follow instructions.    Number 2 is my most memorable. I was about 16 playing in the junior knockout at my club. We get to the 10th hole - long par 4 and index 2. I didn’t hit a very good drive, hit my second up about 60 yards short and pitched on to maybe 25 feet. I started walking and I got this feeling. I knew I was going to hole it. There was no doubt at all. I’ve never felt like that any other time in my life but this one putt was a certainty. It was February and the greens had been recently hollow tined so they were in awful shape. I didn’t even line it up. I hit my putt and it bumped and bounced all over the place until it went in the middle of the hole. If I could bottle up that feeling and sell it I’d be up there with Bezos and musk. Mind blowing!
    • It's strange how ONE person can be THAT much different/better/whatever than anyone else.
    • I saw a YouTube review on a bunch of ball brands and the Maxfli Tour X did very well in comparison. I bought a sleeve and found them to be excellent in feel and distance. But I’m a lousy golfer so nobody probably cares about my opinion. 😃
