I have Cobra S2 now, wanting to get something new.  I keep hearing Mizuno JPX are very nice.

Would appreciate feedback on the Mizuno JPX, or any other iron you recommend for a bogey golfer.

I've heard good things about the JPX-EZ clubs. I would say they have the least amount of GI tech for that category of club. It's really a more chunk CB type club. Still, you don't need lot of bells and whistles to make a club more forgiving. Ping has been making really really good GI type clubs that don't have slots or polymer injection, ect.. Really, it's all about how thin the face is, the size of the sole, and the where the weighting is distributed at.

From what I heard I would look into the following irons,

Ping G or G-Max
JPX-EZ
Taylormade RSi 1

I would go and just hit the clubs you want to look at. Get fitted. Best way to figure out what clubs fit your game. It might not be a set you thought of.

Just bought new irons myself.  It's a process.  Not sure if you're a single-digit hdcp'er or a relative hack like me.  Ether way, here are some suggestions to get you moving in the right direction.

1. As example only, a link to Golf Digest 2016 GI Hot List clubs:  http://www.golfdigest.com/hot-list/golf-clubs/game-improvement-irons

2.  Determine what you expect to get from a new set of irons.  Straighter?  Higher flight? Distance?

3. Identify 3-5 iron models that you think fit your requirements

4. Go to a Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy or other location where you can try irons from each manufacturer, hit and evaluate results on launch monitor.

5. Go with the set that delivers the best results based on your swing.

Other thoughts as I just went through the process:

Get a thorough fitting.  There is a point at which hybrids might make more sense than longer irons.  My new set starts at 6-iron and include 4- and 5-hybrids on the longer side. Irons and hybrids are NOT the same brand, either.

You should be able to order ONLY the clubs you want from reputable dealers. So many sets come 4-AW off the shelf.  That club lineup might not be best for you. A fitting to determine what club complement is best for you is what's most important before plunking down a lot of money.

I don't like to be brand conscious when I go though a decision process like this.  Keep it fact-based and data driven and you'll arrive at the best option for you.  Launch monitors don't lie.  At least I believe they don't.

You should go into a club fitting with a short list of irons you think might work for you. ASK the club fitter if there are other models he or she would recommend you try.  This should round out your 'possibles' to 5 or 6 at most.

Be prepared to make a lot of swings. Bring a glove.  You'll need it. Good luck and keep us posted on your journey.

Do you have the S2 or S2 Forged?

The JPX-850s are a nice club.

I tried the new Cobra King F6 irons and was suitably impressed. The new tech really works. I currently play the BioCells. These are a step up and if I were in the market I'd give them a hard look in the GI category. They're very forgiving for a GI iron.

For hybrids? I'd look at Callaway. Probably the XR 4H.

I'd still get fit and check out how you hit each individual club. You may have to pay for a fitting, but usually they deduct the fitting from the price of the clubs if you buy.

My set is from 4 - LW now. Originally it was a 5 - GW. I have a 4 hybrid. This rotates out of my bag with the 4 iron depending upon the course I'm playing. I bought the 4 iron to use for a driving iron, but I've hit it off the deck a couple of times when I've had to. I bought the SW and the LW because I can hit them easier than my Vokey wedges.

How you make up your set will depend upon your wedge game. If you need the forgiveness, I'd go as far as you can with the set. I have a neighbor who is a 5 HC and plays with Ping wedges that are part of his set. So do what you need there.

Hybrids? Possibly 3H or 4H. For a bogey golfer I'd go 22 degrees. 5 iron or 5H? I like a 5 iron because of where I live. Too much turf interaction with a 5H in moist conditions. In dry conditions I prefer the hybrid. Off the tee I prefer the iron. So your choice.

I've got the JPX-EZs myself, got them in the middle of 2014. Admittedly, I don't have much to compare them to, as they are the first fitted clubs I have had. Before them, I had some generic starter clubs that I used from about 2003-2005, then I didn't golf from about 2005-2014.

That said, I'm happy with them. I can't say I'd be more or less happy with them vs. another club, but I do like how I hit them most days. They were definitely on the pricier side of the clubs I chose from (the EZs were about $800, while the Bio Cells were probably in the $500 range, and the Taylormade options ranged from about $350-500). You're always going to get the best feedback by hitting up a golf shop and trying a few out, if you can.

The EZs definitely sit well with me, though. One major plus is that I got them customized from Mizuno with longer shafts, and while the guy told me they'd take 2-4 weeks to arrive (while mentioning Mizuno is usually on the shorter side of the estimations), they were at my door in 4 days. If you need any kind of tweaks like that, and you're wanting clubs ASAP, Mizuno definitely has you covered on that. I'd definitely call them money well spent, even as someone who might have more clubs in the set than necessary (I don't swing too hard, so I almost never need my 4, 6, or 8 irons).

Not to sound like a broken record as Ive mentioned this in other posts, but the mizunos in question were a finalist for me when I was looking for a new set. I saved 300 dollars and chose a set of wilson reflex from dicks sporting goods. Buttery feel, great distance, with plenty of forgiveness. The soles are very versatile, as they perform well from any type of lie. For the savings, u owe it to yourself to give them a shot. That being said, the mizunos are still great clubs. Love my Wilsons!! Good luck!! Lots of choices out there.

Uh-oh here comes the plug...

Tour Edge Exotics E8 or Even the Silver medal winning EXd (SGI) or CB Pro Tungsten (GI), great clubs.

Mizunos are great irons, I've owned a set or two of theirs, never had a complaint, JPX-EZ are good, I will even say the feel is great.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
