Hi All,

The problem I am having is not getting enough height and spin on the ball with my wedges, and I suspect that the problem might be the S400 shafts.  I think lighter, softer flex shafts might be the ticket.  My swing tempo with wedges is generally slow and deliberate.

Since I don't live near a fitting center, I would like your suggestions for new shafts.

Thanks!!

Blaming it on your equipment is convenient, but probably not the problem. what wedges are you hitting?

My initial thoughts are S200, DG Spinner, or one of the offerings from KBS.

Do you play GI irons?

Yes but not shovels.  And I am a decent ball striker.  I should clarify: I have no problem getting spin if I take an aggressive, full swing.  But I don't get enough spin on pitch shots.

First, a comparison of your iron and your Nike wedge shafts:

  • PX 5.5 flighted has FCM = 6.0 and weighs 115 grams
  • S400 has FCM = 6.1 and weighs about 132 grams (uncut)
    • Note: FCM = 6.0 is a "middle of the road" stiffness rating

You might check out this current thread in this forum on PX Shafts and Wedges. Some people suggest having a lighter flex in your SW and LW.

Also, the VR Pro Forged wedges came out in 2012-13. If you play a lot and have used them for 3+ seasons, the grooves may be getting a bit worn.

Or, you might have a swing flaw that's hurting you.

You might get a wedge fitting to see what you need. As for reshafting, by the time you buy a new shaft, and have it installed with a new grip, you could be halfway to the cost of a new wedge. Also, several brand-name wedges from prior years are under $100, and some have shafts lighter than the heavier wedge flex shafts.

But, if you have no fitters nearby, finding and testing might be difficult to do.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Post a video of your pitch shot in the Member Swings section. It could be just a technique issue. FWIW, with pitch shots in general, you shouldn't be getting that much spin. High spin chip shots can stop fast, but proper pitch technique will be softer with less spin.

Sometimes it's a problem of hitting ground first because the forgiveness of the GI irons masks fat shots. That's why I asked.

Doesnt sound like the case for you however. Maybe you're leaving the fave open a little too much and losing spin that way?

This may help.  Notice the swing is not overly aggressive.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.  I took an informal lesson from a friend of mine who is a scratch golfer.  I am now getting the spin I want.  And WUTiger, I recently bought the wedges brand new from dallasgolf.com, so groove wear is not an issue.
