I tend to goof up my right hand grip just enough to erase my trigger finger. I tend to have real strong outtings followed by real poor ones where it seems Im doing nothing different. I dont pay enough attention to the trigger finger most of the time and I am wonderring if this could be screwing me up more than I think. If thats possible, I NEED to pay more attention to it. And what about trigger finger and putting?

You're not supposed to use the trigger finger for anything so I'm curious, what do you intend to do with it?

If you're talking about the trail hand, the trigger finger and how it is placed can affect how well you can feel the pressure point (pp3, I think?) and can help sustain lag. But if you're playing high 90's and low 100's, it's extremely doubtful that it is a piece you need to worry about. Having not seen your swing, I would recommend focusing on keys 1-3 primarily. Good centred pivot, weight forward at impact, no flipping.

If you're talking about your lead hand, I echo @SavvySwede's comment of, "huh?" :-P

Yes, indeed I was referring to the trail hand. Good to know, thanks.

I have never thought about a trigger finger. Here is a good starting point when discussing the grip.

For me I just kinda lay the thumb diagonal over top of the grip. If you draw a straight line up my thumb it would point up my arm not towards my chin. The image on the right.

For me it just feels like the natural place to for the thumb to be on the grip. I never really think about . For me if I get my left hand on the grip then that determines how the right hand is going to fit.

The thumb isn't the trigger finger, though. The trigger finger is your index finger. Having it split off slightly can help some people hinge the club more too.

Thats good to know and shines some light on my question. I think when I fail to get the ball airborne it may be because my wrist hinge is lacking. When I hit a low trajectory shot that tends to go nowhere, my hands kinda feel like theyre stick in mud. I tried some practice swings at the house the other day making sure the trigger finger was present and the swing felt much faster producing a better whoosh in the impact zone.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
