I'm surprised anyone would intentionally hit their ball into that kind of rough on their chip.  I would have tried to land it as close as possible to the thick stuff but still in the frog hair.  I would have been obviously short of the pin, but that ball easily could have stayed in the rough.  Turned out great though.

Agreed.  I'm guessing this was a practice round, perhaps???  Otherwise, I'd assume he was aiming for the fringe, not the rough.

Nobody sane would do that when it counted because you risk leaving yourself in basically the same position you are already in - above the hole and off the green.  It's essentially a wasted shot.

I count 3 bounces in the rough and then onto the green!  I don't think we'd get that kind of action off the fairway grass at my course at the moment!
