I honestly love these shots! I approach them with the same swing as a pitch.  Slightly open stance, ball in middle back of stance, and take a swing with slightly less wrist movement than a full swing.  This shot for me produces a slight fade which is fine because I also get good spin out of it.  My key is tempo, less lower body movement, and less wrist action.  I do grip lower on the club, but that helps more with control.  (I mentally picture a tiger knock down, where he really holds off the release).  But the other thing is I practice this shot a lot because I get it a lot at my home course.  I'm at the point where I feel unhappy if I'm not within 15ft of the hole.

One thing I mentally tell myself when I have a short approach like that is to think of it as a short par 3. If we rolled up to a tee and saw a 70 yard par 3 we'd think piece of cake right. It helps to have some conviction. Perception can be a bugger, inventing pressure to get it close. But if I don't have an easy shot that accommodates error I pick a spot, not necessarily the flag and play it to where a 2 putt is nothing more than hitting one good putt and tapping in.

I usually aim for the light rough area behind the green or somewhere where these shorter holes are not as well protected. I'm definitely not going to bump and run between two tightly packed bunkers with raised lips or some other sadistic thing the course designer came up with.

Small warning to the OP, this golfer is a +2.4 at least the last time he posted it. At least scratch, I'm sure. . .

Most normal golfers find this shot difficult.

Spoiler

I would just say scratch.  I could play under par at home and then go to a tourney and shoot 5 over.  I've started posting only tourney rounds, so that number will go back to single digits eventually.

I think golfers find this shot difficult because most struggle with non-full swings.  Go to an open field and drop 100 balls within 60yds or whatever of a bin and try and land the balls in the bin.  You'll develop some type of "feel" after it or start to recognize what distance back swing gets what ball flight.

Impressive! Question: how old were you when you started playing and how long were you playing before you made it to scratch?

It's not an up to date swing by any means, I started, officially, on team golf at age 12, but I played before then.  But I don't want this getting more off topic than it is.  So, if you want, you can post more about this on the myswing thread.

Just was curious thanks. I tend to forget about the member swing section

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
