I don't know if this is the right place to discuss because I don't even want to talk about the benefit or validity of the idea . .just how crazy it is to swing a pickax around like that!  Talk about putting your money (or your skull) where your mouth is, lol.  I was basically slack-jawed watching this.  Pickaxe swinging starts at 6 minutes in.

Kids - don't try this at home, lol.

Seems to me the guy makes some sense. As long as there aren't small children or dogs running around, what's the big deal? I've seen pros in the past advocate swinging a long broom or a weed whacker to get the motion. And, if memory serves, Tom Watson advocated a position at impact he called "kill the pig"! Whatever works to get the idea across.

I'm not doubting the validity - I just think it's a little risky to swing a pickax like a golf club.  Just before he does, he says (roughly) "This is a pickax, it's dangerous if used improperly".  Then he proceeds to use it very improperly, lol.

Let's say you're an eager new golfer.  Not too strong, not too balanced.  I see lots of potential issues arising from trying this exercise - ranging from the mundane (slipped out of hands and causes damage, golfer loses balance, throws out back) to the rather exotic (use your imagination, lol).

Most anybody can 2 handed heave a pickax up over their head but once it starts swinging down like a golf club, it's not going to stop.  That's why when you use a pickax the normal way - you're swinging it away from your body.  In case you slip or whatever, it's not going to hit you.

I have never been much of a fan of using a weighted club, which is basically what he's using a pick ax for. On full swings a weighted club can contribute to physical damage.

However, I also believe that any golf instructor usually has something good to offer. If they help just one player save a stroke or two, they have done well.

A weighted club, such as the Momentus, weighs 36oz and does not have cutting edges on each side, lol.  A pickax probably weights 7lbs, including the handle, and, well, it's a pickax.

That's all I was pointing out.  When I saw that I was like "holy crap!".  I get the golf-related idea and I'm not saying it's a bad one.  I just thought it was a nutty idea to swing a pickax like a golf club.  Maybe it's not as dangerous as it looks to me?

I can't believe he suggests swinging a pick axe :-O. One can only hope no one loses hold of that thing in the follow through  lol

    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
    • Day 150 1-10 focus on arching the wrist and getting the ball to go left. Recorded, hit foam balls.
    • Day 467 - 2026-01-10 Practiced at Pinehurst every day I was there, and before Junior Elite this morning I got fifteen minutes of backswing checks in the mirror in.
