I haven't watched the video yet, but I will later.  Zipf distributions are something you learn about pretty early in statistics -- I realize they're different from Bernoulli distributions or Poisson distributions, but now I'm going to be preoccupied (at least until I watch the video) wondering what the mystery is.  I've even given assignments about finding Zipf distributions to first-year students in the past that they didn't particularly have trouble with.
