I was reading somewhere that this is a problem on some courses in the UK where carrion birds (like crows or rooks) that are used to stealing eggs see a ball lying on the fairway and mistake it for lunch.  I'm sure I read that the birds were able to fly off with them (even though I would have thought they might be a bit heavy) but definitely they can move them about a bit, no doubt into a divot or behind a tree.

This happened to me last year. A crow/rook thing (not sure exactly which is which) picked up my pro v1 from the middle of the fairway and was flying away with it, albeit slowly. I chased it to the next fairway where it finally gave up.

If it wasn't a pro v I would have let it take it and drop another ball.

If an outside agency moves your ball, you can drop it or replacement ball as near to the previous location as possible without penalty.
