I can hit my driver 300 yards but usually between 275-290. However it's quite inconsistent and from time to time causes me penalties. I am working on developing a go to tee shot of about 240-260. Is there any techniques are approaches to this? I have a 5 wood but I find it can be inconsistent as well. I am thinking along the lines of a Tiger stinger.

Thoughts?

I think it's going to be different for every golfer.  On narrow fairways I'll usually hit a 5W or 3H (depending on which one is in my bag) cause i know I get can them out there fairly straight.  If they do go off course I know it won't be as penal as my driver just due to the shorter distance I hit those clubs compared to my driver.

I don't have the swing speed to hit a 2i or driving iron the way Tiger and other pro's do, so that's not even an option for me, but might be for you.

My 3W is my go to shot when I need to find the fairway. Driver causes too many OBs.

I picked up a 3 wood so that I had something I could put out there 240-250. I also have the fall back to my 19* Hybrid for 220ish. The problem is, both of those can and do go pretty far offline on a bad hit. So, I guess the answer lies more in your swing than a suggested club. Are you significantly more accurate when you hit anything besides the driver? If so, maybe a driving iron/hybrid is a good answer. If not, then I'd say working on the is the only real answer.

Learn how to hit your driver easier.

Choke down on the club a bit and slow down your turn rates, swing easier, but don't forget to turn.

@saevel25 beat me to it.  This is something that I need to do , but with 240 being my upper numbers at the moment i am scared of the results of the easy hit driver.  I watch a lot of Mark Crossfield videos, and on some holes he will hit his "pat, pat" driver swing to not hit through fairways or to find a tight one.

Newtogolf is correct, its different for every golfer. It really comes down to course management and knowing your own game. We're not machines, so there is really no such thing as a "go to shot" that we can place where we want on demand. If that was the case, we should be hitting the go to shot 100% of the time. So its about playing the probability. Knowing what your big miss is, and playing around it in situations where you absolutely cannot miss in that direction.

I know for me, my big miss is a push fade or a block. In situations where i need a fairway or green, i take steps to minimize it. Not with club selection per sea, but more with course management. Whether that is aiming at where I'm trying to stay away from and playing the ball away from that spot, or if i have the room, giving myself space to miss right. Thats my solution, but yours might be different. Golfers need to find these types of answers in their own games, IMO.

I've found that if my backswing gets too fast, I can push slice really well. lol

Your downswing might be smoother if you pause at the top of your backswing, but it doesn't need to be slower.

Learn to hit what I call a pooch drive. Its like a 3/4 to full swing but without the drive thru power.Just let the clubcome thru without putting much into it.I look at Phil Mickelson all the time and say why are you swinging back so far or youd have a US open.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
