There is definitely a spot in the golf spectrum for economy/Mom & Pop courses.  I play one a few miles from our house now and again.  If one were preparing for Scotland, you might consider hitting shots from their fairways in July/August.  They do not have an automatic sprinkling system and tend to water just the greens & tees.  The fairways offer tight, VERY firm lies in dry weather.

In order to keep costs down, the greens are tiny, the # of tees limited and there are few bunkers.  The cart paths are gravel/cinder versus pavement.  But one can see that they put an effort into keeping the tiny greens smooth, the fairways cut, etc...

The only time I have a problem with a "bargain" course is when it shows very little effort was made to keep it playable.

There's a little 9 hole course run by Ocean Township. Has 9 very small but immaculate greens and 15 small bunkers scattered around the course. The fairways and tees are longish and it gets fairly baked during the summer but they keep the greens green and true. Nothing special but it gets the job done.

Oh!   What is the name of that place?   I think that might be where I started playing golf!   I forget the name, need to look it up but will remember it.

That's it!    I played there when I learned and throughout high school until I moved over to Trenton State.  Lot of good memories there!

i remember the people that owned it and worked there.  Tried to do the best they could with the budget they had.   Super nice.

Here's another take on "low budget" courses, although it focuses more on my budget than the course's! This morning I was sitting at the kitchen table, having a cup of coffee and waiting for my sinuses to begin draining. A daily ritual. My buddy calls with news of a super deal on GolfNow at a local, upscale daily fee course. He gets these e-mail blasts through his smart phone, but can't book through it for some odd reason.

So, I jumped on my computer and booked the deal for three of us, me, him, and his Dad. We played one of the premier public courses in the area for the princely sum of $13/per! For 18 holes! With cart!

Of course, we stuck around and spent a few Deniros in the restaurant enjoying some delicious food and adult libations! I'm sure that's part of the plan, but I still spent far less money than I would have otherwise.

For those on a budget, if you're not checking out some of these services you're missing a good bet!
