Neither you nor I may ever have a tour player's swing, but we can attain the best swing of which we are capable.

I've been re-reading "Harvey Penick's Little Red Book", which has been returned to me after several years "on loan" to a friend! Well, he moved in the interim, and you know how things get lost and then found in that time.

In it is a chapter titled "Maxims", in which Penick quotes Jack Burke Sr. on his ideas about the golf swing. Maxim #9 is: "Let the ball get in the way of the swing instead of making the ball the object." I will freely admit that this is possibly the hardest idea in golf to get across to a beginner. People are result oriented and they see the swing as a process that leads to a result, rather than a result in itself.

And as far as instruction goes, Burke follows up with Maxim #24. "Be honest with yourself. What you would find out in six months of practice, your pro can tell you in five minutes."
