Something I never thought I'd see! Earlier this year I'd been REALLY struggling with my driver: short, snap hooks, wild slices, poor distance. Last year I'd been hitting it well - averaging around 240/250 yards when playing solidly. This year I've been disappointed; probably averaging around 220 until the past fortnight when it's started to come right again. I think my swing had been too flat and i'm now concentrating on a more upright plane on the takeaway. Seems to have worked. My longest 2 drives ever before today were 297 yards (centre of par 4 green) 2 years ago and 288 downhill back wind this year.

Today was my best ever 9 holes! Course is Par 36 for the 9, around 3250 distance and I was 44. Very happy with 8 over. Not only that, but I used my driver on 4 holes - all back wind (To negate the effect of the wind on any side spin) - with the following results:

6th hole - 278 yards

7th hole - 285

9th hole - 270

And...

4th hole - 320 yards!!!! :-) ?????

Really chuffed!!! I still know my average is circa 250, but it's great to know that once in my life I made 300, even if it was back wind!!! I'd guess the wind was worth around a club and a half in strength. Now I just need to maintain the consistency of strike - all 4 drives went where I aimed which is VERY unusual!

Happy days...

That's a great feeling. I read somewhere that the wind at your back is good for 5-7 yards of help but wind in your face hurts 12-15 yards. It's just not fair! Great driving day.

Congrats! Its exhilarating the first few times you do it. Then it gets frustrating when you can't just do it all the time. But hey at least you know you got it in you!

When I was playing regularly, 250 was sort of a minimum distance for me, and I have crossed 300 more than once.   Now that I have not been playing much recently, my golf muscles have really gotten weak and 200 is sort of my minimum and I can cross 250.  :~(:~(  However, I am now planning to start a gym regimen with the intention of building my stamina and strength and work on core muscles principally because that is truly what drives my swing.  Crossing 300 is a good feeling.

Congrats on getting there because the way golf courses are designed and built today, distance is important.  Two things truly let you get good distance.  One is swing speed, but just as important is hitting the ball in the centre of the club face.  Hit off centre and you lose distance and get the ball curving, which winds up costing distance.

My drives average a little less than yours, but I drove 300 yds about 6 weeks ago.I should point out though that I had a 40mph wind behind me.

I drive my golf balls 300 yards all the time. That's roughly the distance between the road and the parking lot. Then I get out of the car.

Enjoy it while you can.

I got spoiled in my persimmon-driver days in the early 1980s in Oklahoma. One course I played was built on hard red clay. It had some doglegs with helpful banking - a dogleg left would have slalom bank on the right edge of the rough that kicked a hot draw past the bend in the fairway.

On hot summer days, it was easy to roll one out 300+ yards on such holes.

But, between softer Illinois fairways and creeping age, drives just don't go that far anymore.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Thanks all. Days like that definitely bring back my love for golf. It had been a struggle this year, my scores weren't reflecting the definite improvements in swing. Especially irons and short game. But losing balls , mainly with driver, was killing my scores - too many trebles and worse! But the past 3 weeks my drives have been back to where they should be and thus my scores are coming down. From above 50 average for those 9 holes to around 47, yesterday's 44 being the best (3 pars, 4 bogeys and 2 doubles). Just have to maintain the consistency to hit that 90 mark for 18...

    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
    • We agree here. Top of the car has a forward force, bottom of the car experiences a backward force via the braking. Both about the COM (somewhere in between). Result is a rotational flip. Since the forward force is still higher the car probably still globally travels forward. Sure, pretty basic. You really think there are deliberate twist forces applied? Like forcing the club head forward and simultaneously forcing grip end in the opposite direction? Heck I don't think we even slow down the grip end deliberately let alone force it the other way. Sorry, if I am missing something here. The orientation change is simple incidental because there is different rate of global movement of grip vs. clubhead throughout the swing. I also happen to think the best swings have the least amount of differential movement between the two end in the impact zone.  In my defense, I never thought one could do justice in covering all aspects of a golf swing in a paragraphs or two to begin with. Especially not with grade school physics..😜 Okay.
    • Wow, @DeadMan that is such a helpful breakdown of what’s around. Really excited to check a bunch of these out. Thank you. Will definitely go to Walnut Creek. Will also try and get a commonground tee time. Haven’t played many Doak courses yet! If your schedule frees up, let me know!
    • Yeah. I'm not sure what Vishal is really talking about with the "constrained" COM. The club's COM doesn't really change much. Less than the body's does… We definitely apply force to the golf club to move it both translationally (linear force) and rotationally (torque) to the golf club. That's what Manzella's alpha/beta/gamma is all about. Even before they switched the reference frame from the global to the club-based one. 😉
    • Any time you apply a force to an object that is not directly through the COM, you're applying a torque. Take a car for example. If a car is moving and you hit the brakes, the only contact point is on the ground. The brakes make the tires slow down which applies a force backwards at ground level. Since that force is not applied directly to the COM, it also applies a torque, which makes the car rotate forwards. The suspension at the front applies another torque upwards to fight against that twist (because the ground is in the way). You can feel the front end of the car dip when you brake. Then, when you stop braking and that force is no longer applied, the tires stop applying that torque to the car and the car feels like it rocks backwards as the suspension evens itself out. That's all torques being applied. Ignoring the twist forces applied to the club leaves you way short of being able to describe the motion. Otherwise the orientation of the club would never change.
