Welcome to The Sand Trap.  There are a lot of good iron out there. We can each give you an opinion, but you should be the final judge.  I recommend going to a shop or demo event in your area and trying a bunch. Three things to look at are performance, looks and fit.

Don't worry about mis-hits, just try them. Narrow down your choices to 2 to 3. Then, if you can afford to, go to a fitter and have them work with you to get the right shaft and lie, etc. you will not regret doing a fitting.

I have a set of 2008 big Bertha irons that are unbelievably forgiving. If I was in the market for a new set I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a set of big berthas - whatever model year I could get for around 350 or so from Calloway second hand or 2nd swing, etcetera

Of course it's better to try everything and/or get fit but if cash is limited and don't have time or ability to try lots of clubs - that's what I'd do - can always send them back.

Looking for new or used?  Cheap or money doesn't matter?

Im a newb and have no experience to share. I found this review article a good introduction to the new options out there. It also helps you get familiar with the options and allows you to do some searching for the older versions of the clubs noted

Assuming the Ping Zing are actually suited for your swing (shaft, lie etc), I wouldn't change the set because those are a really nice set of irons.  But the key is getting fitted and then picking a set of clubs that suit the specs, preferably in SGI or GI

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

Ping makes some nice clubs.  I have Eye2's and ISI's.  Never tried the Zings.  They have a nice fit system for loft, lie, shafts and grips.  Like others have said, if they fit, keep playing and maybe get some lessons and range time in.  Then look for some new sticks.

I am playing Miura's and they have some sweet clubs.  Their Passing Point line might be up your alley.

Lots of nice clubs out there and everyone will have their own opinion so I would go out to a few stores and look to see what looks good to you and see if they will let you try them out and then go from there.

Driver: :callaway: Diablo
Woods: :callaway: Big Bertha 2 & 4
Irons: Miura MC 102's 3 - PW & Mizuno MP 67's 3 - W
Wedges: :mizuno: MP-R12 52* & 58*
Putters: :ping: WRX Ti4

I have only been playing a year, and it took me 3 sets of irons before I cracked it. First off I started with a used set of Dunlops with graphite shafts. To be fair they were much better than some people may think. I then bought a new set of Benross clubs, which were marginally better, but I didn't feel comfortable with them. During my ownership of the Benross irons I decided I needed a 4 iron, which I lacked. I couldn't find a matching club, so I found a blue dot Ping G2 iron on ebay going cheap. It felt so wonderful I just knew I needed Ping irons. I got a set of second hand irons (3-SW) for £85 ($120). I haven't looked back since

In my bag (Motocaddy Light)

Taylormade Burner driver, Taylormade 4 wood, 3 x Ping Karsten Hybrids, 6-SW Ping Karsten irons with reg flex graphite shafts. Odyssey putter, 20 Bridgestone e6 balls, 2 water balls for the 5th hole, loads of tees, 2 golf gloves, a couple of hand warmers, cleaning towel, 5 ball markers, 2 pitch mark repairers, some aspirin, 3 hats, set of waterproofs, an umbrella, a pair of gaiters, 2 pairs of glasses. Christ, it's amazing I can pick the bloody thing up !!

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
