When do you change your wedges? I mean. I've had mine for about 1.5 years now, and the number (56) is starting to fade off.

I don't know what is more important: to change my wedge or to buy a new putter, since the grooves on my Yes golf Dianna are also starting to fade off

Thanks in advance

I finally changed my wedges after 3 and 4 years using my old ones!

Go for the wedges because you need grooves to put spin on the ball!

I can still put spin on the ball with the wedge. the problem is that the way the gooves in my c groove putter are at the moment (they are starting to get bumped and worn after 1 year of using) are killing my average of 28 putts per rouns (last round I did 35 putts, and everyone was telling me that I had the perfect line, the perfect srtoke, but for some reason the puts wouldn't go in! Plus, the greens were just as great has they can be in my golf course!)

I will try to convince my parents to give me both for christmas...

I would buy a tool from Golf Works or Golfsmith called a re-grooving tool. I re-groove my wedges every season. I don't let the looks bother me as long as I get the same bite from them.

Whenever whatever makes the wedges worth it to you wears off. I may follow some advice below and sharpen my grooves, but really, my PW is just a ten-iron to me, GW 11.5, SW 13 . I don't yet do the specialty wedge tricks (on purpose; spin happens). Maybe I should learn those.

There's a story that Tiger has to replace his wedges sometimes, not because of the grooves, but because he wears out the bounce on them by practicing his short game so much.

How do you wear out a putter??? I have an 8 year old Odyssey, and it's still looks like new. I have 2 other putters that are far older than the Odyssey, and both are still perfectly functional. I still have a TM Tour driver that I bought in 1987 which is still in the same condition as when I bought it. I can't imagine ever doing anything with a putter that would wear it out.

Try putting every day 3 straight hours, non stop. My rossa (the 1st putter I ever had doesn't have it's insert red. The part where you hit the ball is completely white, so I changed last December. But the c groove putter is starting to go the same way that the rossa did...

Plus, if your TM Tour driver from 87' is in the same condition when you bought it, then, or you never used it or you don't play very often: I bought my titleist 905R in January and the face is starting to have some marks because I hit the ball every time in the same spot... Plus, a friend of mine broke the face of his 1.5 year old ping G5, so...

How do you wear out the bounce of a wedge?

According to Stan Utley's

The Art of the Short Game : "Tiger Woods goes through three or four lob wedges in a year not because he wears out the grooves, but because he actually wears the bounce off the bottom of the club. He's a serious short-game practicer. The sandy soil in Florida is also harder on clubs than dirt up in the Midwest or Northeast. It acts like sandpaper, scraping bits of metal off the bottom of your clubs as you use them." So, I guess by practicing too much on sandy soil

Latest issue of Golf magazine talks about worn-out grooves on wedges.

worn grooves vs fresh grooves
you get twice as much spin on fresh grooves

I am going out to check my grooves right now.

How do you know how fresh your grooves are? Do the groove sharpeners really work?

I currently play with a 1963 Wilson Dyna-Power sand wedge. The grooves on my wedge still work fine I can still impart a great deal of spin to stop shots into the green. Forged wedges from this era are still in demand and command prices that are higher than new Vokeys and Clevelands!

I also alternate between 1955 and 1964 Macgregor putters. You can never wear out a putter.

Irons: Staff 1987 or 1967 Dyna-Power
