I will be playing a Foursomes (match play) match and a Four Ball (match play) match.  Any Rules twists that often catch players unfamiliar with the formats?  I have generally reviewed the Rule and Decisions but nothing replaces actual experience.

29-1. General - In a foursome, during any stipulated round the partners must play alternately from the teeing grounds and alternately during the play of each hole. Penalty strokes do not affect the order of play.

29-2. Match Play - If a player plays when his partner should have played, his side loses the hole.

D29/4 Dropping Ball in Foursome Competition - the member of the side whose turn it is to play next must drop the ball.

D29-1/3 Who Plays Provisional Ball in Foursome - provisional ball is played by other member of the side.

The one rule that has the most common impact in fourball matches is in the order of play.  There can be a great deal of strategy in the order you choose to play, whether its second shots on a par 5, approaches to a green, or putts and/or chips.  Order of play may also have an impact in requiring an opponent to wait to complete a hole when he'd prefer to putt out.  This is one of the rules where there's no penalty for disregarding it, but you (or your opponent) can be required to replay a shot taken out of turn.

    • Day 595 - 2026-05-19 Got some short game work in today during some lessons. Made a lot of putts too. Without trying. Golfer kept chuckling.
    • Day 15, May 19.  Today, after work (in stages), I hit two dozen practice balls at home.  Slow swings, focusing on the lifting of the arms as per my latest lesson.
    • Day 259 5-19 Slow work on arms getting more in front. Lots of pause at the top, then rehearsals, then swing.
    • Day 70 (19 May 26) - weekly 9 hole session with my good friend this morning, however the better session was this afternoon with my grandson.  He put in for nine holes of match style play (we did stroke count as well).  The rules - I had to play from my regular tees but with irons only (no metal woods or hybrids (nothing with head covers)) while he played from the most fwd tees with his full bag.  Was a fun match and watching his competitive juices flowing.  He won the match 1/0 holding the lead as we tied the ninth.  Stroke wise it was a messy nine for me and he beat me by one stroke - not bad for a 10yr old.  Best of all - it was a dream session come true.
    • My instructor before I found TheSandTrap talked about he felt his left side more in the golf swing. I am nearly all right side dominant. I am also almost 100% right eye dominant, to the point I have low stereoscopic eyesight because of that dominance.  With one of my pieces, a bit of left wrist flexion. That is much easier to feel if I focus on my left hand. For me, taking my right hand dominance out of it helps a bit.
