As i am practicing my hip turn and posting left leg to start the downswing, i started noticing that i will hold my breathe really hard and wont release until after the completion of the swing.

During a regular swing, i dont really notice as it will be over.

During practice and drills, where i pass on top of backswing, hip slide and turn, swing, i have a good 10 seconds of holding it in, i get light headed and dizzy and many even sometimes sick in the stomach. I can't seem to breathe and just stop breathing when i am focusing on all the steps.

Any drills to breathe?

Just breathe?

Why hold it for 10 seconds?

There are times when I'm practicing when I'll get out of breath a little bit. Not dizzy, but out of breath, because I'm concentrating and not breathing very much.

I've noticed myself breathing hard after a 10 minute slow-mo session and have always wondered why until I read your reply, @iacas. Hack's question makes me curious though...

For a normal swing, I try to take a medium-deep breath with nice, even exhale just before I start my backswing, but I think I hold it from there... not entirely sure.

What are your thoughts on breathing during the swing (while playing)? What do you do during the swing, re: breathing? (or have you ever even thought about it :-))

Edit: Nevermind, was just outside practicing and noticed I don't hold my breath. I start inhaling again as the backswing starts. Not sure where the exhale starts, once I started paying attention to it, I couldn't tell what was natural.

Are you trying to be funny, hack2? That's one of the oldest skull jobs in golf! Asking your playing competitor if they inhale or exhale on their backswing!

Seriously though, I have a DVD of a concert by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. During the presentation every member of the band gets their own segment. The bass player goes back to his music school for a tutorial for students studying the bass. During this he tells them, "When I'm soloing, I really have to remember to breathe!" This is so he doesn't get too tense.

As for my golf swing, I'll try to breathe normally during address, take a fair sized inhale, and then a good exhale just before pulling the trigger. Heck, it works for rifle and bow shooting, both of which I do. Slows the heart and relaxes the muscles.

no no, legit question! I seem to not be able to breathe when i'm working on positions and swing things.

If i try to breathe, i lose all my form. Not sure if why.

    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced.
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
    • Day 189 2-20 Really focused on rotating the forearms today with wrist arched. Did some single arm swings as well.
    • In March of 1978 I got to play Pebble Beach GC. Played it from the back tees, since I knew I'd probably never play it again. Oops, shot 102.  Three weeks later, I played Torrey Pines - South, again from the back tees (maybe 6,700 yds in those days). Shot an 87, and missed a birdie putt on the lakeside No. 18 green. In 2021, I played TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities area. This is site of the John Deere Classic. It was early October and the course was undergoing renovation, so I got to play the front nine twice for $110, lunch included. The course was great and the driving range was unbelievable. Hint: you need to pay attention to the wind drafts before you try to challenge the cross bunkers! BTW, Deere Run is a public course. Norwood Hills Country Club is site of the Champions tour event, the Ascension Charity Classic, now the Stifel Charity Classic. This classic layout has 36 holes. This summer I hope to play the West course where the Champions event is held; Missouri Golf Association is sponsoring an amateur event there.  I have played the shorter East course three times - it's quirky but quite fun. Also: Circa 2000 I played il Picciolo, a course at the base of Mount Etna in Sicily. The volcano was spewing ash that week. The course frequently hosts European pro events. Lots of elevation change and gently rippling fairways. Left a 7i shot 10 yards short of green on one par 5. Turns out the hole had a 12-foot high alpine flagstick, and I was not as close to the green as I thought I was (bad perspective).
    • Just the Plantation course at Kapalua. Not like I didn't know it, but it was a visceral reminder of how ridiculously good the tour pros are. That course is f***ing *hard* playing it from ~6500 yards. From the tips!? Then if there's wind?!
