The pros and cons of a baseball grip have been discussed at length with no conclusive evidence either way. I have found that occasionally switching to a baseball type grip provides a little relief from tension, is one less thing you need concern yourself with, and often results in a little more power. One does have to be careful however, not to let the hands start working "too" independently .  I normally use an overlap grip, but at times my fingers hurt and the switch helps a lot.

I just could never get that to feel comfortable nor give me any feeling of control. However, for the past few months I have been having a strange phenomenon where my left hand comes off the club. (I'm left handed). It's so bizarre. I check my grip, doesn't happen on practice swings. I focus on keeping the same tension as I did on practice swing. The only thing I've revealed is when I take my club to its top position, if I let my left elbow fly outward a bit (away from my head) I notice that tension 'pulls my left palm off the club'. If move my elbow back down into place then the heel of my hand goes back on the club. But when I make a swing and focus on my elbow not flying out...just as I start the downswing my palm/heel comes off again. It's maddening. Strange thing is this happens randomly like my shanks. Sucks.

I play often with a guy that uses a baseball grip full time. He's a scratch player. The grip is essentially the same as a traditional grip, anyway.  there's just no overlap of the low pinkie finger. It's just a comfort thing.

Funny this topic came up. I am thinking of trying out this baseball grip, again. I used it a few decades ago before switching to the Vardon grip.

Now that my hands, and wrists are getting older, with a few surgeries behind me, I want to see how this 10 finger grip feels after a round or two. Right now, with using my version of Vardon's grip, I feel a few aches after playing.

    • Day 555 - 2026-04-09 Played 17 holes (we skipped 6 to pass a group letting us through). Hit more good shots than I was expecting. 😄
    • Day 233 4-9 flow drill while focusing on better hip/chest rotation. Used mirror.
    • Comment:  Huh, I practiced regularly until 1/31, got busy in Feb-Mar (as I knew I would), and got reinspired today.  I have done some intermittent practice in the past two months, but let's get back on the daily practice wagon. Day 1, April 9 2026.  I worked on some pelvis turn limiting drills, doing one for several iterations before context switching to hit a few balls slowly (trying to retain that feeling), and repeating.
    • I’m thinking maybe Jason Day read my post. He’s sitting a -3 two off Rory and Burns.
    • Is it only the weekend broadcasts that have a low commercial count?  I feel like it has been a long while since I last watched a Thursday of the Masters, so maybe my recollection is off.  I feel today has a lot more than four minutes per hour of commercials, and far fewer of the fun stories they tell during the Sunday broadcast.
