My only reply is why do you think most sets today come with hybrids? It is because the 3,4 and 5 iron are really a 2, 3 and 4 iron with different markings. I have played this game for over 50 years, built and fit clubs for 15 years. Making the face more flexible does not give you 10-15 extra yards. While there has been a gain in distance in drivers over the years mainly due to new metal technology and adjustable heads, irons have not seen that drastic a change. They made them more forgiving but the only real changes over the last 30 years is rebadging the irons. A set of 2-pw is no longer available, but the lofts on todays 3-pw are close to what the old 2-9 iron were and even some of the 1-8 iron sets. I hear a lot of players say gee, I used to be able to hit a 4 iron really well, but I can't any more. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this matter. Thanks for all your responses.

Yes, but that does not make me right. It is just my personal opinion from my experiences though the years.
