What are the lofts and bounces of your other wedges? That's the first piece of information we'd need.

Update: According to your signature, you have 14 clubs in your bag. You're using Mizuno MX-19s, which according to http://www.mizunousa.com/equipment.n...golf&cat;=irons have PW 46 (5 bounce), GW 50 (6 bounce), and SW 55 (10 bounce). However, some people use the phrase 3-sw to mean 3-pw + sw (although Mizuno's website doesn't list a 3-iron for MX-19s). If you don't have a GW, you have a 9 degree gap between your PW and SW, and my suggestion is a 50-degree GW (possibly the MX-19 for consistency) and toss the idea of adding a lob wedge for now. Otherwise, your suggestion may end up being the 60 degree LW, depending on what you're removing from your bag. However, I would suggest against this, given the inability of players at our level to hit that one well without a ton of practice that is, quite frankly, better spent on other endeavors, such as sand play or putting, with existing clubs.

So, here's the thing. The PW used to be 48-50 degrees in most sets. Then companies realized they could claim you could hit your PW longer in their set by setting the PW to be 45-46 degrees, in what used to be 9-iron range. The 9-iron moved down, and so on. The problem is, the sand wedge didn't move. So, instead of 4-6 degrees difference in wedges (which is fine), there was now, in some sets, as much as ten degrees of difference.

So, the gap wedge is what used to be the pitching wedge. I use mine out of the sand (8 degrees of bounce is fine), for chips where I want it to run (I avoid chipping with irons, largely because I have trouble doing so with the game-improvement irons I have), and as a full-swing club. If you think of your PW as a 10-iron, your GW is an 11-iron. It isn't a club where you have to do only one thing with it. It's just a "weaker" pitching wedge and is very nice. I would suggest, then, a 50-51 degree gap wedge, with 8-10 degrees of bounce (unless your course conditions strongly dictate otherwise). Mine is a 52-degree Vokey (46 degree PW, and I use either a 56 or 58 degree for my other wedge). I plan on switching to a wedge arrangement of 45-50-54-58 when my handicap settles into the teens.

Agreed... Just ordered some M/B's today from Ping. 54* and 60* I like the bigger face and how you can adjust the bounce.

Another Tour-W fan. After trying them out a couple times I finally ordered a 54/14 and a 60/10 today. The 60 will get the "H" grind so that I can hit flop shots easier and still have the higher bounce.

I get my new i10's next week and wedges the week after.

out of interest - why the 54.14? i have those specs on my vokey but main reason im changing is i want 54.10.

TheMizunoMan - what sort of shots do you want to hit with this lobwedge? This may determine the loft/bounce you should get.

hawkeye,

I basically went with the fitter's recommendation. I told him I dig with a full swing sand wedge and this club will be used primarily full swing. I hope I didn't make the wrong move so I'll find out soon enough.

What about the 14* bounce makes you change to 10*?

Get a mizuno, but try the Mp-T and the Mp-R because the head shapes differ. Different bounce options too.

The type of shots i would like to hit:

Seeming im off 28, and only been playin 4 months and im 14 yr old, i go for the cheaper srixons and topflites...

I found with my new mizuno mx 19's i create a lot of spin with low spin balls ...

I would like to hit shots from 15-10 yards and the odd chip with more control so then i wont have to worry about it bouncin off the back and me having to chip on and 2 put, id rather be on the green and 2 put!..

just more control around the greens.

Thanks for your help!

themizunoman

P.S, i will probably be getting a wedge later this year as im out of dosh now :P, im not looking for one any time too soon

I know Todd Sones is a renowned instructor but eyes over the ball is not a putting fundamental! I have spoken to many instructors - from David Orr, Bruce Rearick, and Mike Shannon, and they all want you to set up where you see the line properly. I have watched numerous fittings for Odyssey, Cameron, LAB, and general fittings, and may have seen two people who were fit with their eyes over the ball. Most were inside by at least 0.5”, or so. I think eyes over the ball hurts more strokes than it helps.
