I am looking for a golf instructional book. Something to help me with the basic fundamentals, and maybe something to help with the mental part of the game as well. I plan to get Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf". Can anyone suggest another book?

There's the question of why you want to learn fundamentals from a book. Are you learning for the first time or reviewing? If it's the first time, start with a single lesson from a pro before reviewing.

When I need to review fundamentals of long game, I go to these: The other Hogan's book - Chuck Hogan's "Learning Golf" is great in fundamentals. It's the one I started with, along with (shortly thereafter) Butch Harmon's "Four Fundamentals of Winning Golf." While those books have short game sections, when I want to review short game, I go to Stan Utley's two books, "The Art of Putting" and "The Art of the Short Game." For the mental game, you can't beat Bob Rotella's "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect."

It's mostly just for review purposes, just to keep my mind entertained during the hours when I can't golf. I would say my putting needs more help than my long game and my short game, so I will look for "The art of Putting". I've found (online) Bob Rotella"s "Golf is a Game of Confidence". It sounds like a good one. I will definitely check out Rotella's other book as well.

I was just browsing trying to find what instructors and players think about the best training aids. There are several books listed in their top top 10 that I intend to purchase. Havent really read any notable ones so won't be able to give you first hand info until I receive the ones I ordered.

Hope this helps....

Rotella's got a handful of books. "Golf is a Game of Confidence" was OK; the pieces about the amateurs breaking various scoring barriers was better than the pro sections, in my opinion.

One more word for Utley's short game books: he has the record on the PGA Tour for fewest putts through nine holes: six. There's a reason, I believe, that he doesn't write about or teach the long game much (not that I'd object to having his long game). But that record should tell you something about his short game

I highly recommend The Four magic Moves to Winning Golf by Joe Dante.

After reading his composition, I can say that I finally understand the correct fundamentals that make up a successful golf swing. Dante discusses in detail the faults of the mid to higher handicappers and then prescribes the correct approach. He analyzes all of the individual swing movements and conveys to the reader a complete understanding of how the fundamental law of physics comes into play with principles such as the conservation of angular momentum (COAM.)

I also own Ben Hogan's Five Fundamental's. A good title, but Dante's instruction on a very similar swing is far more clear and comprehensive.

Unlike some of my previous PGA instructors, I am no longer in the dark as I now have a more complete understanding of the golf swing. When I go to the range or golf lesson, I can practice and focus on the correct techniques for improvement. After reading this book, the light bulb clicked on.

Regards,

Mark

For the mental game another great book by Dr. Bob is Golf is not a game of perfect. And for fundamental any of Dave Pelt's bibles are good books.

What are the "four magic moves" that Dante recommends? The book reviews on Amazon do not described what Dante teaches other than noting he recommends an unusual movement with the wrists.

eatmybologna:

Carland,

Dante's four magic moves are multiple and essential moves in four categories. Too much information for me to describe here on this forum. You can go to this website and read an abridged version of his book. CLICK HERE There's no cost to view the information, but do realize that it's condensed, and a lot of very good information is left out, especially the chapters on Conservation of Angular Momentum (COAM). You may not agree with everything there. For example, during the back swing, I like to cock back my wrists using my larger muscles instead of doing so right from the get go as Dante suggests. Look at the links shown on the left edge or the bottom of the web page for the main categories (The Grip, The Stance, The Back Swing, Top of the Swing, etc.) Be careful not to miss the sub categories. For example, the Downswing category has the following detailed sections: Golf Down Swing Part1: the Problem, Down Swing Magic Move1: Moving the Hips, Down Swing Magic Move2: Keeping the Head Back, Down Swing Magic Move3: Making No Effort to Move the Golf Club, How it Feels, Golf Swing Check Points, the Down Swing and Golf Swing Plane, the Insidious Hand Lag and How to Fix That Problem, Holding the Wrist Position. Do understand that the owner of this website (some guy named Andy B.) will try to get you to purchase the missing COAM section from him. His version is titled "The New Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf." If you want to read it, I wouldn't buy from him, but instead get the original book from Amazon.com with everything in there for much less. All of the information from his book is fascinating to me. I treasured Dante's breakdown of COAM and how it applies to the golf swing. After reading this book, I'm no longer in the dark when it comes to the understanding of what makes up a good golf swing.

Based upon your guys recomendations, I picked this book up at the book store last night. Just looking it over at the store, I liked the writing style and the comments. I am looking forward to reading it, in fact have it with me today to start reading at lunch.

Cant go wrong with this guy. He lays out lessons in life and golf at the same time. Has the ability to get across a complex idea in a simple down home story telling manner. I carry more gems around from his book than anyother that I have read.

    • Day 35 (26 Feb 25) - Day of easy work (hanging around the house as son had shoulder surgery and I needed to help keep an eye on him).  Worked on low spinner 50deg wedges - keeping the ball low flighted and checking quick.  Went with the 8i after to do low flighted runners.  Great visit on two ways to get the same/similar results.  May be able to get away tomorrow for a short 9hole round (as long as the son's recovery cooperates).....
    • Day 1: 2/26/2025: So, I'm starting over on this again.  My son brought home the mother of all flu bugs from school. It raged though our house and knocked me on my butt for about 3 days.  Now, that I think I'm clear of the death plague my son gave me. I was able to rise early this morning and get some nice mirror work in. I felt stiff like a board for the first few swings, but loosened up and was able to get at least 20 minutes of first robotic slow swings and then gradually more fluid swings.  My focus was on the timing and fluidity of my priority pieces.
    • I use a MagSafe connector on my tripod. Occasionally I use those clips.
    • Working on some swing videos. What are you guys having the best luck with as far as devices used to record the swing?  I have a tripod with a magnet that I stick my phone on but it is somewhat of a pain because I have to remove the cover on my phone and when I pull it off the magnet the tripod head changes and moves position. I was thinking something more like an ipad maybe. On a different style tripod and maybe even set it up to mirror to a tv.
