Against sound judgement, I am getting the bug to maybe getting back into Kayak Fishing.  My car is a 2013 Toyota Prius. Rhino Racks have a carrier designed for this car. The kayak I have in mind is a 12.5 ft Tandem.  I am wondering how well this setup might work, pitfalls, e.t.c.  Also....I might attempt a BTB ocean entry, but last time I tried that, I ended up flipping 300 yards offshore  in February waters off California Coast, Great White territory. I am probably better loff confining my adventures to the bay or inland waterways, still the thought of 30 pound Yellow Tail, caught off the submarine canyons of La Jolla is appealing.

We just have normal racks and J-mounts on my car.  The other car she uses cradle mounts (claims it's easier to load/unload).  But I like regular racks since I can get mounts for anything including my yaks.

good luck

The Rhino (from etrailer) is a regular rack, very similar to Thule and Yakima and of course all sorts of mounts such as the J mount. The kayak is fairly heavy and might be difficult to raise by myself to fit into a J rack. They do have a mount that pivots and would be easier to do a side-lift , otherwise the saddle mounts would be easier to use an inverted kayak tote on the rear window/hatch. My biggest concern is the roof is not all that long (nor is the car, for that matter), Car measures about 12 feet bumper to bumper.

OK - yeah, we have Thule racks.  Thule J-mounts and Yakima cradles.  The Rear cradle has rollers making it a little easier.  I just pick the things up and put it in place from the side.  the wife isn't strong enough for that apparently so she hoists the yak from the back onto that roller cradle and then pushes it forward.  Her kayak is a 12 foot lake style (it really cruises), Wilderness brand I think - set up for tracking on calm waters.  I'm not a fan of the J-mount attachments/clamps, it's just stupid little wing nuts.  the Cradles are nicer with big easy to operate twist handles.

Mine is a 10.5 Dagger Axis with that drop skeg.  Love it, but if I want to go to higher skill white water, eventually I'll have to spring for a real river yak instead of just the adaptable one.  But, this is just fine for lake, most rivers, and fishing.  Probably fine for calm and medium ocean too.

With the shorter car, IMHO, just making good front and rear tie downs might be a bigger deal than the type of rack or mount.  I tend to ignore them completely unless I'm going highway speeds.  But I'm a bit cautious as we don't get out often..

@rehmwa Thanks for the insight. The Prius does have good mount points for the front/rear tie downs. The front has a removable panel on the front bumper which accommodates a screw hook which is part of the spare tire/jack assembly. The rear has two tabs under the frame near the muffler. Never thought about NOT using tie downs, but might be okay for short trips if mounted in suitable rack mounts.

I do it the same way a Hawaiian Kayak rental company put a Kayak on my rental sedan.  Two pieces of a Morey Boogie board and two tie down straps.  You cut the old Morey Boogie board (maybe you have one) and make two pieces about 6 inches wide and the length of the Boogie Board.  Those go under the Kayak, the tie down straps run over the Kayak and through the door jam and through the car.  It's pretty much bullet proof and cost about $8. https://www.amazon.com/Pack-Premium-Lashing-Straps-Vault/dp/B01IW1UJKE/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1497294138&sr=8-11&keywords=tie+down+straps

If you don't have a Boogie Board you can use pipe insulation or some other foam padding (boogie board pieces are perfect though).  https://www.amazon.com/M-D-Building-Products-50144-Insulation/dp/B000FPDPDY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1497294161&sr=8-2&keywords=Pipe+insulation

I found this pic, not boogie board pieces but the same idea.

The La Jolla fishing grounds are pretty hearty and kind of dangerous... 1 mile out in the Pacific among fishing boats that can have a hard time seeing the Kayaks.  I've been out there, it's too scary for me.  You might consider the San Diego harbor and catch bay bass, that's what I do.

@No Mulligans, well, I can tell you from personal experience, that I would never use anything other than hard racks as opposed to inflatables or soft padded ones. I had used them on a Hyundai and ended up denting, having mal-formed roof. This was a result of the pads being not enough, and also the stretching of the web straps through the door jambs caused the roof to bend out of shape. Not saying it does not work on every car, just my experience with a Hyundai.

@rehmwa, in case you are curious, here is what the "pivot" carriers look like as opposed to the "saddle" which is one piece.

I have a Yakima rack on a CR-V with a set of the J hooks and a set of the rollers. It works out well. I put a 12' and a 14' SOT (sit-on-top) each. It works really well, and I probably over-tie them down, and all that.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
