Well... It will definitely take a few times out (range sessions and playing) to get used to this 3 wood in the bag.

Another thought was to take keep the 4-wood in, (I still have it), and take the 3-hybrid out and put in the 4-hybrid instead, and play 5 wedges (I NEVER use a 60° though.)

But I need to put a bigger grip my 3-wood on it (I bought it gently used)... And give it 5 rounds.

Yeah, when I was debating recently dropping a wood (turns out I can hit my 3-wood just fine when I don't try to kill it) I debated a 60, but I never hit one... I used to carry a 58 when I first began and had a 60 degree Watson wedge many years ago.  I also debated a left-handed club for the rare circumstance when I might need it (hasn't come up).

Do well with your 3-wood.  I look forward to the update.

The JPX 900 is the wood I am looking at purchasing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok after a few rounds with the 3-wood, I have come to the following conclusion. Though I hit the 3-wood fairly well, I don't really need it... Besides I can't hit the damn thing off the tee... I hit it off the ground ok... (occasional pull-hook or slight block). but of the tee I'm straighter with my dink-and-dunk swing with a driver... So before the Club Championship next weekend... I may be putting the 4-wood or Power Hybrid back in the bag.

A little late to the party but the 3 wood I am looking a is adjustable from 14° to 17°. This club will eliminate 3 clubs for me. I play a standard 3 wood on the blacks and the 4 Wood on days I play whites. This will keep continuity in the bag and be available, instead  of forgetting to swap out.

The advent of adjustable clubs has made some of the purchase decision easier.  My driver, Mini 1.5, 3-wood, 5-wood, 3h, and 4h are all adjustable.  Right now the Mini is benched because of how well I'm hitting the 3-wood.  I have everything adjusted to provide excellent gapping between clubs... and fit the requirements of specific holes on our course.

Great;  let us know how it goes in future rounds.

I think my too-similar-distance of 3W and 5W, on the other hand, was not hitting the 3W well.  In my last round (small sample size), it very clearly went further than the 5W.  Time will tell which of my two small sample sizes was accurate, if either.

Well... After five rounds... And some serious note taking, I've come to the conclusion that Newman isn't long enough for me to need the 3-wood. My 4-wood is back in the bag for now. The 3-wood may find it's way back in depending on course conditions and such.

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
