Nice trip.  That is one place to which I want to return before I get too old and stiff.  Great that you got the obligatory Swilcan Bridge photo.  I have mine, too!

Nice to hear about a great trip.  You missed a great chance for another distillery, Glenmorangie at Tain.  That golf course is a little treasure, I thought, and Royal Dornoch is still my favorite, of all the courses I've ever played.  Congratulations on your 92 at the Old Course!  Only one question, did you ever get to that pub I recommended?

We went into town for lunch at the pub and as it was graduation week, there was no parking any where near, we found a spot on the street but it wanted lbs, we searched the car, no lbs, so we had lunch at the Castle Course clubhouse. Graduation was the day we left, and it was a good day to leave.

have enjoyed Glenmorangie in the past, just haven't found one that I'm a fan of but I did have a dram that night and raised my glass to the 16 men of Tain.

Fully agree on Tain and RD. Being that I've spent a few moments on the ocean, the Links fairways look like a moment in time, a snapshot of what the ocean surface is, and while St Andrews is a nice easy breeze small waves, Tain is a small craft advisory. Big 10-15 ft surf, We had the course to ourselves, but at Royal Dornach players were stacked. As far as my ocean analogy on Royal Dornach I would say mostly 10-15 knots with an occasional Tsunami.

Its a good day for golf!

I am playing Brora in a competition in September and by the looks of your photos it looks interesting to say the least! Any tips or advice for the course?

Thanks! We had a beautiful day and didn't feel the wind too much until the 18th and then we were straight into a stiff breeze. The one thing I remember, and I'm hardly qualified for any golf advice, is that there were several 'run outs' on the fairways. 2,3,5,7,11 and I don't recall each but on the 3rd I had my best drive only to end up on the steep rough leading out of the gully, making it tough to reach the green 148 yds away.

Have a great tournament!

Aloha,

will

Here's the 3rd hole, thought I could make it with the prevailing breeze but stuck it in the far side wall of gully.

Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Living in Scotland, it's always good to hear of folk coming from far and wide to enjoy two of the things we're best at - whisky and links courses

Nice write up along with doctored photos!

With the weak British Pound at the moment, there will not be a better time to visit Scotland or indeed the rest of the UK to play our finest courses. Can't control the weather unfortunately, but that's all part of the fun. Looking forward to playing the old course at St Andrews next year.

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
