The rough isnt particularly bad, but there is possibility of having a side hill/downhill lie for your 2nd shot, which is where the indecision comes into play

Let us know how your round goes. Just bomb the heck out of your drive. A downhill lie from 240 yards isn't all that bad, plus it should roll off the steepest part anyway?

Hopefully, there isn't too much $ on the line for this shot. . .

Here is an example of a par five on my home course.  This is the last time I played it in league.  I used to hit driver and over time I felt it was not a good bet.

I hit a club off the tee that keeps me short of the trouble.  The trouble is bunkers and heather.  It is hard to see the heather it is the subtle brown area on the left and right off the rough.  Heather or the traps are trouble.

My miss is left (which I achieved) but because of the club I am in manageable rough.  What can't be seen is that just past the bunker on the right 2/3 the way down the fairway is a down slope.

The plan is hit it off the tee (can't reach trouble),  hit one down the hill then wedge on.  I got cute with a 58 to a front pin and landed in the trap.  Luckily I got up and down from the sand.

If you hit driver all kinds of bad things can happen.  If I do hit one 250-270 off the tee it still leaves a long 190-210 shot into a well protected green all the bunkers are deep and long is bad.  Heather is is all around if one gets away from you and you get in there you have to hack out or you might not find it.

I believe for me OVER TIME this is the best strategy to score low.  My level of skill is not to birdie or eagle but to limit bogie or double.  I am one of the few that takes less than driver on this hole but I tend to score better than my opponent.  I can't remember seeing an eagle on this hole and most birdies were not going for it in two.

Just got back from the round. Ended up with a bogey on this hole, although I believe that was more due to my lack of confidence hitting the second shot. The drive was ok, 242 but I popped it up a little so it didnt get much roll down the hill. when I got up to the ball, the hill wasnt anywhere near as severe as I previously remembered, so driver is definitely the correct play. The ball was slightly above my feet, but nothing too excessive. I aimed my 3 wood at the trees on the right because I thought the ball would come back to the left since it was above my feet. Well I was wrong, the ball ended up going straight where I aimed it, into the trees. Punched a 9 iron just over the green, chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey.

Looking back, 3 hybrid might have been the better shot for the 2nd shot, or even just a properly aligned 3 wood. But regardless of that, driver is definitely the play here for me, especially when a popped up mishit still gets me out to almost the cart path, a well struck solid drive will definitely reach the second fairway. The rough on the hill is not thick and almost bare in some spots so landing on the hill would certainly bounce forward.

I'd go with this.

Thanks for letting us know. Bogey is not bad for a nemesis-like hole...
