I just switched irons and the new Irons came with grips with a reminder rib.  For me I think this is a good thing because I seem to grip the club inconsistently and over time I tend to go stronger and stronger.

With my old clubs (no rib) I was fighting a hook.  With these I am more likely to push it a bit.  I also tend to hit a straight ball, its harder to draw with the new clubs.  To be fair the new clubs have less offset but it is a big change.

I want to stick with the reminder rib, I think it will help my consistency over time.  The rib is now aligned neutral.  I think I would like it aligned slightly strong.  I blow my own grips on so if I swap them out I can adjust them as needed  To the fitters out there is this sound thinking or should I stick with the neutral alignment until I figure it out?  One thing I am concerned about is that I have been fighting overdrawing the ball for so long that I am probably compensating it.

I was playing the Callaway CF16's.  I liked the clubs and loved the extra distance but my distance control was not good.  I moved into Ping I200's with the help of my fitter (who is on vacation hence the question here) and it seems an improvement.  I have only had them for a day but I hit a lot of balls on a monitor and played two simulated rounds of golf.  Because I got new irons I played from the red tees so I could tee off with an iron.  Never hit more than a 5 iron.  It was odd because I used to aim right to play the big draw, with these I have to aim left to play the slight push.  I shot even par which has never happened before.  I hit a lot of greens and if I missed a green it was not by much.  It doesn't count for anything but it was a good sign!

Any help is appreciated.

It's up to you. Since you do your own grips, try it one way for awhile and see what you think.

Unfortunately the Ping grips are on with tape from the factory.  I don't think I can blow them off.

I'll play as is for a while and see what happens.  I am going to use the same grip on my hybrids (which I will blow on) so I will be able to experiment with them.

If you want to use a standard grip...or blow off the stock one...just tape a nylon cable (cut the end off) tie to the bottom side of the shaft and slide the grip on...have used this method for years

I would get rid of the ribbed grip on one of your irons and try something not ribbed. If you want to manufacture a shot, and adjust the grip, the rib would bother me. If you install a non-ribbed, then you've given it a shot to see if ribbed is an issue.

The rib is very subtle.  It would not hinder you from “shotmaking” I think it would help.  It gives a point of reference for you grip or adjusted grip.

As I suspected after hitting more balls I am settling in to a nice push draw.  I am going to Innsbrook in a couple weeks I’ll see how it goes there.

Good luck!

My point of reference at address is placing the face where I want it, then taking a grip. Hey, we're all different. It's what makes the world go round. Shotmaking? That's something others do. Mine is limited to a wedge and uphell/sidehell lies.

So evidently the ribbed reminder grip is for my pleasure.  As I settled into the new clubs I am able to control my grip better.  It allows me to grip the club consistently (which I am not good at) and make subtle changes in grip to effect ball flight (as much as I am capable of such things).

It is cold and snowy here in MI.  I am playing my new ping I200's on a launch monitor/simulator quite a bit.  My reasoning switching from Callaway CF16's to the Pings was to get better distance control.  After lots of range sessions and many simulated rounds I have found the distance consistency to be the best I have ever experienced.  My swing has improved in the last few months as I have learned to me more connected or less "armsy".  That certainly has something to do with it.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
