can I please have some opinions on callaway steelhead xr' s.. 5-sw +Aw for £570 for a 28 handicapper?

If you have a chance to get fitted, you'll at least get a set of clubs for your swing type. 

If you don't, buy used, there is so much good stuff out there

If you are just starting out i would go for something cheaper. There is nothing worse than dropping that much money on something and finding out its not for you.

Check the likes of Golfbidder and Affordable golf. These specialise in pre-owned clubs and you can get some really good deals and all are checked for authenticity (sometimes an issue on Ebay).

You can get great clubs for less than £200 and if you find you really like golf and are totally hooked you can trade them in for newer clubs or you may find you love the ones you bought at a fraction of the cost. Plus most clubs, even second hand, can be altered for lie/loft etc. by a golf pro/shop.

I myself started with Wilson Staff Di9's. My swing improved and they became too light. I spent £40 on a set of nearly new Hippo beast as an experiment as they had heavier shafts and were less "Game improvement" and it turned out to be the best £40 i spent on golf. My Titleist 695mb's may take their place now the swing is working but goes to show you dont have to spend loads of money to play decent golf.

Those would be fine, just expect to add some “character” to the heads as you break them in and learn to swing.

Not sure if Callaway Steelhead irons fall into this category but in my opinion you should look at 'Game improvement' irons. This means irons with a wide sole (i.e. lots of weight in the sole of the club) that make it easier to elevate the ball upon contact. These types of irons are easier to hit and as the name implies, improves your game making golf more enjoyable. Good luck.

Go to a golf store and get fitted. While you are there most golf stores have a net you can hit balls into use it and see if the clubs are right for you.

I am going to second @RussUK.  You needn't spend anything close to 600 pounds for a decent set of irons.  Clubs that were top of the line, 10-15 years ago, can be had for a song.

I picked up a set of Ping G25s for $230 plus shipping, another $25 on Ebay. Don't know what that equates to in pounds but it should be less than the Steelheads you are looking at. Plus the Pings are a game improvement club and easy to hit. As said above, look around for pre-owned clubs, you can find some real deals.
