what do you guys wear in the winter that allows you to stay warm but also make a fairly fluid swing. i have tried under armor but it is designed to trap body heat of someone doing something active. right now i am just layering up but if anyone knows anything that works real well lets hear it.

thanks

I recently golfed in 22 degree weather here in Ohio. I have a thermal undershirt made by Russell that is very similar to Under Armor's cold weather stuff. Then I put a long sleeve t-shirt over that and wore a hooded sweat shirt with a winter hat. I had on a thin pair of thermal socks covered by normal socks. A pair of long, thermal underwear and jeans rounded it out. I felt no measurable restriction and I shot my best round ever.

as you said - Under Armour cold gear is designed to trap the heat in. Isn't that what you're looking for?!

I recently took the plunge and spend €45 ($60) on an Under Amour cold long sleeve top - I have since bought one for my dad and 2 more myself (ebay - €30-35 (~$40/45). It takes a while to get used to the feeling - but a couple of sessions at the range will get you used to them.

In Ireland it's usually cold and wet - when i'm playing i would wear a long sleeve t-shirt, a polo shirt, a sleeveless sweater and a sweater - and maybe a fleece or a jacket. Can get restricted. With UA i usually just need one polo shirt and a sleeveless sweater - jacket if it's raining. If you warm up properly you will be nice and toasty on the first tee and people will wonder why you're only wearing 2 layers!

If UA doesn't suit you try other stuff - Nike and Adidas and Canterbury are popular here. Also the outdoors gear - Lowe Alpine, Helly Hansen, Berghaus. The fitted feeling is a little odd at first but if you get used to it it's great. I didn't like Nike or Canterbury or Helly Hansen but UA was great for me.

Other gear - I havent gone for thermal leggings yet (might eventually) but i'd always wear warm trousers and waterproof leggings (great for the wind, nevermind the rain). Then a wooly hat and the above on top half - plus mittens on my hands between shots.

If you're prepared for the weather it's one less thing that can go wrong - too cold/wet etc.

UA and others make cold weather shirts that are not fitted, also. That's the kind I have. It gives me a nice light base layer but doesn't feel like it's crushing me together.

Below the waist

  • Pantyhose with the feet and crotch cut out really block the wind. (I only do that when it's R.F. cold. I don't find it restricting)
  • Old school basketball socks (or dress socks) up to the back of the knee plus thermals cut off just above the knee. Both of those go over another pair of socks or underwear.
  • Avoid leather soled shoes.
Above the waist
  • A-shirt
  • Thermal cut off just above the wrists
  • Heavy t-shirt
  • Long sleeve turtle neck
  • Medium weight sweater
  • Fleece or nylon vest
  • A nylon windbreaker or rain suit pullover

Matt- This came up recently with some friends (not surprisingly I guess since

it is winter). I tried some new ish products from Duofold , who are to me, known more for their traditional thermal layers. They have ventured into the techy side, and have two products that I think perform excellent in warmth, mobility and oddly enough, price. I got them from the Champion site that Duofold links you to when you click "Buy now" at the top of the page. Here are the two products I have... ProTherm VariTherm

Not to be a smart ass or anything, but it's supposed to hit 70 today so I'll probably wear a pair of slacks and a soft collared shirt.

Beware of old dudes with old clubs and new grips.

Slacks? If it were 70 here, I'd be playing in a polo and golf shorts. Please note my avatar and you will see why I have no sympathy for 70 degrees.

At the end of the season we were teeing off with temps in the high 20's-low 30's. I was wearing two pairs of socks and regular golf pants. On top I was wearing a DriFit T followed by an FJ long sleeve mock. Over those I wore a 1/4 zip mock sweater and covered it with an Adidas ClimaProof 1/4 zip pullover. I have a Titleist winter hat and FJ Winter Gloves. Overall I was warm. In fact, I found myself unzipping both the pullover and the sweater by rounds end.

I start with a base layer made by a real outdoor company ( www.patagonia.com ) - top and bottom. Next add socks by smartwool, and a mock t- neck by footjoy, and top it off with wool slacks and a vest (wool or wind blocking synthetic, depending on the weather). A pair of warm gloves for when you aren't swinging, and dont forget a coleman catalytic heater with the golf carg adapter (it fits in the cup holder).

In Pacifica, CA, its in the 40's and raining on and off, I played last Thursday and worn my Mizuno mock thermo a long sleeve polo shirt, my Zero Restriction Gortex vest and my Mizuno outer jacket and was able to swing without any restriction and stay warm. I also keep a knit cap in my bag incase it gets colder.

The gortex wear keeps me warm. I notice Tiger was wear a type of under armour wear in San Diego at Torrey Pines.

Well the base layers must be good as Tiger was wearing one on saturday and sunday at the Buick! I have a Under Armor Cold gear and it is amazing.

Canterbury have a new product out called IonX that is meant to really improve performance, so much so that a Premiership team have signed a contract that does not allow any other team to use the product!

Try to find 'Nike Thermal sleeves', they are two sleeves, should cover your arm from the edge of your glove to your bicep, no restriction whatsoever. You can wear a golf shirt or a turtle neck overtop. Should also try to find either Nike or Footjoy cold weather gloves, if they fit properly they are almost as good as your normal leather glove. Finish it off with some longjohns and a toque and you are all set for some cold weather golf. Played a few rounds in november before snow fall and it wasn't that bad.
