Like a 30 minute lesson?  I haven't had a lesson in like 20 years.  How do I know the guy is attacking my problems instead of trying to get consumer loyalty and long-term lessons?

Intuition I guess.

If he confidently tells you things you don't want to hear, that's a good sign.

I had few one time lessons, until I found a good instructor. Once I found the right guy, I stuck with him for several years.

The one time lesson guys, I just knew they were of the smoke and mirrors breed of golf instruction. After the first lesson, I just knew.

Finding my right guy was all his doing. He came across as a genuine guy, who wanted to help me, and not himself to my pocket book. The fact that he was also a club fitter/builder was a big plus.

On the flip side, a golfer looking for just one lesson, doesn't need to be so picky. Probably better off checking into the local college adult classes. They are better than a one time visit with an imposter.

I'm a mid handicapper and I've had very few lessons (I'm mostly self taught). But the lessons I've had have all been with people who actually played PGA Tour or LPGA Tour. These people are extremely professional and you can tell they are really trying to help you even if they don't ever see you again. My experience. By the way, they are expensive too, but worth it.

It can be a challenge to find good instructors.

I find about half-and-half, good and bad instructors.

And once I find a good one, can I mesh with him personally?

What former pros teach?
