Other than proximity, is there a way to figure out which site best to go to? This coming Monday. Near me, there's Spring Lake, Essex in NJ and Southhampton in Long Island. There are 144 players in Essex, the biggest one. I'm leaning towards Southhampton because it's pretty out there, yeah, it's all about golf, lol. Anyways, still looking for list of qualifiers and other info to decide. WWYD?

I wouldn't go 😉

I'd probably pick a course I'd want to see, but distance is a factor.

Southampton is not sectional. That's the preliminary one. Standard there will be decent, but there won't be any PGA Tour players there. I'd wait and go to the sectional qualifier at Canoe Brook (I think it is). That has 50 odd PGA Tour players playing at it. Standard there will be the highest that you'll see outside of going to Shinnecock.

Southampton is right next door to Shinny though. I thought about playing there, but decided that my game isn't quite up to speed and I didn't want to find it very windy and get that letter from the USGA. Gonna stick with the US mid-am this year and toying with the US Am.

Thanks for the correction, leaning towards Southhampton.

I would go to the one with the most players, because I think that give the best chance for a playoff. I have been to a US Am qualifier, and the playoff was pretty exciting (right up to the point when they had to call it for darkness & finish it the next morning .... and I wasn't coming back to watch that)

I would look at who is in the field, but that said I don't know where to get this info.  Does anyone know if there is a list somewhere of who is in each qualifier?  Even for not going to watch I'd be interested in tracking how the PGA guys do that don't automatically qualify and are going through the local qualifiers.  Anyone know which PGA guys are playing in which local qualifiying tournaments?

I used this one for New York, decided not to go to locals, did lookups on some of the names.

    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
    • Day 204 (22 Nov 24) - Weekly men’s group round today.  Temps in the upper 40’s, WNW winds 5-15mph - was the old man in the foursome (next youngest is my junior by 10yrs) - held my own against them.  Iron play getting more consistent -seeing predictable ball flights and distances. While the consistency coming around still had sone solid negatives as I had two dbls and one triple. On the plus side - eight pars and one birdie.
    • I don't think anyone will really care.   It's your call.  Just be consistent.
    • I agree, until we are watching the 18th hole in the dark or waiting for the champion to finish and it's been 5+ hours
    • Question for the group. The course I normally play at has 27 holes - 3 9s that they use to for 18 in the various combinations. Is it okay to declare* if I’m playing front or back when I play 9 on this course? I’m figuring I need to declare before I play a shot. *meaning just say to myself that this is the back 9. Curious what people think. Of course, my only holes left are 13 and 17, so I’m going to declare the back 9 for the rest of the year. Probably only one or two more rounds though.
