Just read in the paper that an AJGA tourney will be held at Mill Creek Golf Course Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll be going out to watch, and I swear that I will be on the proper course watching the actual participants! Not like what happened last year.

They held the last qualifier there on Sunday, and there were kids shooting sub par rounds! We played there about 2 weeks ago, and one of the starters told us that some of the kids in another qualifier liked the course just fine but thought it was a little short! The South Course is about 6,600 from the tips. And the par 5's and 3's are short, but there are some monster par 4's!

I hope the weather doesn't mess with them too much. And if anybody in the Youngstown/Boardman area has some time, stop by Mill Creek, enjoy watching some good golf, and give these kids some applause.

I went out yesterday to watch. Haven't seen any scores from today. Will catch them in the newspaper tomorrow.

And yes, the level of golf talent I saw out there was very impressive. I went back and forth from the 10th tee to the 18th green which are only about 30 yards apart. I watched a young lad who was maybe 4'6" and 80 lbs just launch a laser beam off the tee dead center!

I also spent a little time at the practice range, and saw 15 year old girls who could bomb it so far past me it isn't even funny!

68, 67 leads the boys after two rounds. 69, 70 leads for the girls after two rounds.

Both of the Swan kids from our area (we teach them) are playing pretty well. Isaiah made the cut and Lydia is T6.

Some great golf being played out there, for sure! I couldn't get out Wednesday, I had yard work to get caught up with!

All I can say is, a lot of those kids sure impressed me!

Wow...just wow.       The low score being -10 thru 3 rounds for the guys and -1 for the girls.

From the land of perpetual cloudiness.   I'm Denny

And all the rounds averaged under 4:00. 3:51 was an average I saw.

The thing is, we've been under some weather pressure. I was close enough to hear the starters talking to the competitors. They impressed upon them the idea of playing quickly to get the tournament concluded.

Tee times on Tues, were delayed  by at least 2.5 hours.Wednesday was pretty decent, so I guess they got play done.  I haven't checked the listings yet, so I don't know how anyone finished just yet. Will report back.

Congrats, Erik. Both of your pupils made the cut and acquitted themselves well.

Aidan Tran went berserk in the last round and shot a 5 under 65, to beat the 2nd place finishers in the boy's division by 9 strokes! And the winner of the girl's division, Sophie Linder of Tennessee, shot a 68 in the final round to win.

There was some great golf played by these youngsters!

I'm also glad that the Director of Golf, Brian Tolnar ( yes, we have an honest to God Director of Golf now), make the course available to them.

Now I'll look forward to the YSU Lady's Invitational which usually happens around Labor Day.

    • @TxGolfDude I’m curious as to how long this ‘repeatable swing’ has lasted. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we all know how cruel the Golf Gods can be. I too have had quite a golf swing journey. Unfortunately, when it comes to the golf swing I have zero natural talent. Nothing about it feels comfortable or natural. The grip? I’ve done them all and it still feels like I’m holding a knotted oak branch. The proper take away feels awkward and weak. Arms in a proper position, asinine and no feel of any power. I’ve had times where I think I’ve developed an acceptable swing with handsome ball striking for months only to fall apart. So, how long have you had this swing working for ya?
    • How come the marked shots on the picture add up to 366 yards and the label says 325? Are you playing it at 325? In any case, that hole is narrow with a capital NARROW. If those woods are lost ball territory, then I think you hit from the tee whatever club is accurate enough that you'll be able to hit the fairway "most" of the time. That could even be a wedge potentially, especially depending on how restrictive the trees back near the tee are. I might seriously consider playing this hole as 8 iron 6 iron or so. There's more room up by the green than the fairway, so save the longer club for the second shot.
    • Day 555, May 10, 2024 Practice outside at WW, hitting shots here and there. Good day.
    • I took a big step back last season in terms of scoring. I felt I'd plateaued and committed to another round of lessons and working on meaningful swing changes. Went from a 7.9 to an 11. Back down in the 10s. Just starting to see some of the feel of improvement show up in scores. In fact a few rounds ago I had my best round, both score wise and ball striking and putting, in a while! Shot 79 with a mental breakdown finishing bogey-bogey-bogey on a tough three hole stretch where I go scared of the water blowing up my 70s round and yanked three drivers in a row after pumping it long down the middle all day and then hit two of three approaches scared-yanked away from  water as well. Feeling like I can put some 70s rounds together this season!
    • Considering I only played a single round of 9 holes last year and only a handful of rounds of 9 holes in the 6 years before that. Now playing 18 hole on average ever 2 weeks this season. Definitely improved. Not by a drastic amount, but definitely improving. Hitting more pars and bogeys. Driving straighter etc. Practice helps! :D
