Executive summary:  what should I look for in a woods fitting?  I am aware of the rules in LSW about this, but I know almost nothing beyond that.

Full story:  I have never been fitted for woods, other than my driver and possibly a hybrid suggestion when I got my irons.  When I started golf, I eventually picked up Cobra F-Speed woods (regular flex), 3 and 5, and Cobra baffler hybrids.  I had a thing for Cobra clubs for a while.  At some point, I thought (correct or otherwise) that I'd hit a 4-wood better than a 3 or 5, and got a Nike SQ^2 4-wood, also regular flex.  I also got Nike SQ 3 and 4 hybrids at some point.  For both the Cobra and Nike woods, I was guessing on just about everything (and I bought used, or at least off the shelf, in all cases).

I later got 3 and 5 woods, plus 3 and 4 hybrids, in Maltby, with stiff shafts.  Again, I was guessing the right shafts and such to use.

Lately, I have been carrying the Nike wood and hybrids with me, although with my current (fitted) set of irons, the 4H is higher loft than my 5-iron, and gets about the same expected distance, so I won't be carrying both for a while (I plan to keep the 5-iron and replace the slot the 4H occupies).  I switched back to the Nike woods when I got my irons last summer, as they are regular flex (replacing a I-guessed-stiff-flex-when-buying set of irons from six years prior).

In any case, I now have Game Golf data;  using my eight regulation rounds this season, I'm expecting 222 yards with the driver, an average that includes plenty of bad drives (15 drives have provided me less than 190 yards, some due to trees) but only 184 with the 4-wood, although five strikes with that club have provided me at least 200 yards each (there have also been several... poor strikes). The 3H is getting 175 yards.  I play my 5-iron to 160-165 yards.  I also hit punch and trouble shots with it.

I have been debating replacing the top of the bag (except driver) for quite some time.  I'm trying to figure out what I should look for in terms of a fitting.  I'm not sure I've ever gone for a full hybrid/woods fitting, although I think the Ping rep who fitted me for my irons suggested what I should get for a 4H if I were going to make that purchase when I got my irons.  I don't imagine my specs have changed that much since then, so that's probably fine for purchasing if I so choose.

Ideally, I'd like some club that I hit as a strong second-shot on par-5s, plus fitting some gaps down to the 5-iron.

Lastly, is this (a good suggestion for clubs and their specs to fill these gaps) something I can get from a OEM demo/fitting day, or do I need to go for something deeper?

My bottom line expectations from a proper club fitting are better, more controlled ball flights, which equates to lower scores.  To me that's all a golfer should expect.

You should expect to hit woods :smartass:

@Shindig, I think you're kind of overthinking it. It's pretty similar to an iron fitting. You go in with your current clubs, tell the fitter some information about your shot zones and your common misses, then you hit different clubhead and shaft combinations.

And no, if you want a comprehensive fitting, you probably won't get it at a demo day.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
