I watched the Nike golf special last night on The Golf Channel in preparation for the release of their new drivers this weekend. It was pretty cool to see all the technology that goes into club making.

I am exciting to see all the easy change shafts that are coming out from most of the manufacturers this year.

One thing I found interesting was that Tiger was asked why he doesn't play a square head driver and his reply was that he likes to work the ball and the square driver hits it too straight and he can't work it without changing his swing dramatically.

Has anyone hit one of these new driver's?

I could understand tiger wanting to work the ball, most pro's do, especially if they have as good swing as him.

Dick's Sporting Goods is Mishawaka, IN is having a Nike Demo Day this Saturday. I would think that would be a company wide type of event. You can try one of their new sticks and talk to the rep. Don't know if they have any freebie items, which is always a plus. I'm always game to visit for a 2 pack of balls.

Hit the new square Nike @ Golfest in Orlando. I was really, really surprised by it.

As drivers have gotten bigger, I've developed more & more of an issue with backspin - I hit more fairways than ever ... and get less roll than ever (sometimes even backing the driver up). First generation Nike square spun the ball WAY too much - pretty much more than any other driver (with the possible exception of the FT-i).

While I haven't had it on a launch monitor, my initial impression of 2nd generation Nike square is that it spins the ball significantly less. While it launched the ball high, it didn't balloon & the ball ran out on landing. I'd love to test it on a monitor.

For those who care about such things, 2nd generation looks & sounds better than 1st.

The sound was one of the big things that they mentioned in the special I watched. Nike did a lot of work to try and take the noise down a notch.

I wonder how the durability is going to be on the new easy fit shafts.

I hit one at a Golf Town in Victoria B.C. on Wednesday night. Used the launch monitor and man the thing was almost impossible to hit offline. I thought I'd have a problem looking down at the square head, but it really wasn't an issue. The sound of this years' model is much better than last years'. I was quite impressed with it. They will be selling them tomorrow for $430, but I'll be sticking with my Rapture which I like a lot.

I hit one today, probably one of the most forgiving drivers I'd ever come across. The 5900 has a HUGE sweet spot. Anywhere on the head gets decent distance and launch. Very straight, and the sound is much better than the last generation. Still, For $399...it's a tough buy. I also hit the Nickent square head and I was just as big of a fan of that one. For $199, a better deal IMO.

Some of the people that his the new club today really liked it better than the other sumo's. I like the charcoal look of them a lot better, much more appealing.
