I really really want to play a course in the mountains. I live in North Florida so trying to find the closest mountainous course possible. Not looking for anything extreme, as I know I would have to travel much further. Just looking for some sweet elevation changes and beautiful scenery. Any recommendations in Alabama or Georgia? Don't want to drive more than 4-6 hours at the most. Any further and I would just assume fly.

Check out the state park courses in both Georgia and South Carolina.  Highland Walk, near Franklin Springs, Ga.  is quite a challenging layout and definitely mountainous.  Some of the state park courses feature over-night accommodations as well.

Currahe, Waterfall, Sky Valley, and Achasta are all in N. GA mountains. The first two are private but easy to get on and the other two are semi private with online booking.

Here in central Alabama, Oxmoor Valley (Ridge Course) on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail has a lot of major elevation changes.  I would stop short of calling it "mountain golf", because there's only 200-300' between the high and low parts of the course, but there are lots of major ups and downs, rock outcroppings, nice views, and it's a nice course and a good value.

Around Oxford/Anniston, not far off I-20, Cider Ridge is a pretty decent track, and they refer to it as "mountain golf".  I'd have to agree...it's probably as "mountain golf" as it gets in Alabama (and it's just a couple of miles from our highest point at Mount Cheaha).  Good price there, too.

Both have websites with some good photos that can give you an idea, and should be within 4-5ish hours of you.

Thanks everyone. Right now looking at playing Cider Ridge in Oxford and then making the driver over to Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham. This can easily be a one-night mini golf trip from where we are so should be perfect. Next year may try and plan one in North GA and play a couple of the courses mentioned.

Cool, @gray, let us know how it goes, and what you think of the courses.

It's another hour-ish north, but also check out Limestone Springs just south of Oneonta.  Again...tough to really call it mountain golf, though there are lots of large elevation changes (particularly on the back 9)...but probably about as mountain golf as you get in AL.  They have a play-all-day rate there, and the course is usually in really good condition (and rarely, if ever, crowded - probably the least so of the 3, as it's out a ways).

@gray, were you able to make the trip, yet?  If so, how'd it go?

Not yet. About to start building a house so trying to save funds where I can. Might try to make it up there in the spring. Did make the short drive up to Dothan about a month ago to play Highland Oaks and had a great time there.

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
