In my experience cheats who never own up are pretty hardy. They sleep just fine. It takes a semblence of class to be conflicted in the first place.

I see her more as Michelle Wie who may be a bit lost in her direction because of onset of adulthood + independence, whatever and maybe, just maybe the incidence might have triggered what was brewing anyway.

I just don't think one incidence is at the root of turning her life into a Shakespearian tragedy. For all we know, she just hasn't been practicing much.

Well said.

Me too.

She is, lest we forget, a 23 year old who probably has to deal with more attention, pressure, hype etc. in a day than any of us will in our life.  Good luck to her; she is hardly the first person to need a break.

Identity and emotional distress could be due to what I said. Sure it's possible it's absolutely wrong.

Identity and emotional distress could also be due to the fact that she was heavily punished for an act that may, for all we know, have been completely accidental (negligent, yes, but there is at least a possibility that it was not deliberate...).  Regardless of the rules, that has to have a serious impact on one's mental state.

She was "heavily punished" with four strokes? When it was a few years ago a DQ?

After the fact, the majority of people felt bad for her and were on her side, despite the completely non-accidental way in which she handled things - the way she spoke to the official who told her, the way she played the victim role, etc. For that completely non-accidental reaction, after the fact, a few people spoke ill of her behavior. But they were in a small minority, too.

@iacas left out, bullshit. She know what she was doing. Mental stress could have been avoided by following the rules.

My point was more that it is irrelevant whether you or I believe that she was or was not heavily punished.

Lexi Thompson appears to be having serious emotional issues at the moment, and I was forwarding one possible explanation for the same - that she feels has been heavily punished (the knock-on effect, if nothing else, was heavy - she lost out on a major championship because she broke a rule/nobody saw her break said rule during her round).  I don't think it is unreasonable to hypothesise that that situation could have a really detrimental impact on one's mental health, especially given the cruel timing - waiting until she was on the 12th hole of her final round did seem particularly unfortunate.

For what it's worth (and I admit it is worth very little..) I listened to a podcast recently with John Parramor (who clearly knows a lot, lot more than I do about this kind of thing) and he believes it was a mistake, as opposed to a deliberate act.  He also confirmed that the punishment was downgraded from DQ because it was deemed to be wholly disproportionate.

Either way, I hope Lexi Thompson sorts out whatever is going on in her life (like I would hope for anyone else, really).

Otherwise it would just be cheating without getting caught. I don't know who Parramor is but people get soft on young bleach blonde females.

I think that for some people, playing tournament golf ist helpful to get their minds off things and for others it's the other way round. She seems to be the latter. I don't hink it's the golf. I think it's the stress of it all combined with her personal life.

One of the things with which I disagree with John Paramor… though I wonder if he honestly believes the 2019 deal where you get NO additional penalty whatsoever isn't going too far the other direction.

There wasn’t any ‘going soft on her’ as far as the rule and its enforcement aside from the 4 strokes and not a DQ change. But that wasn’t specific for Lexi right? The video certainly suggested it to be questionable as accidental. Had she picked up her ball..tossed it to her caddie for a cleaning then placed it back..maybe. She only lifted it a few inches...then moved it over and put it back down. But anyway...again..it was her response that left me with a negative impression of her. Back when we first discussed this Erik made a post that generally offered an example of an appropriate response. Lexi didn’t do any of that. She played the victim all throughout.

Yeah it’s gotta be rough. I think she’s really struggling with an internal battle with her own integrity and moral virtue. She knows she’s a good person. But the guilt from the ball marking incident has taken its toll. She knows she’s a cheater and is trying to cope with that. It’s the Peter Brady syndrome. When Peter broke the vase but still accepted gifts and took the praise of being the only one to not say it was him as the others tried to protect him. She’s a fraud and needs to come clean and clear her conscience.

OMG. Really? (I edited my initial response) but this coming from one of the biggest Tiger fans here strikes me as really amusing. Wonder why his "indescretions" the last decade or so aren't as bothersome?

And once again, @GrandStranded takes it upon himself to bring up Tiger Woods in an unrelated topic/discussion.

LOL.I also posted how impressed I was Sunday with what he did. I also posted in the tournament thread on Saturday I hoped Tiger would win so Colin could get to see it.Just curious how a big fan of his could forgive him, and could then be so relentlessly unforgiven to a young female golfer.

I'm not going to speak for him, but this is cheating at golf, not banging hookers.

You complain about how often people post about Tiger, and it turns out that's almost exclusively what you post about.

Back to the topic, please.

After reading this thread, I believe I've changed my opinion.   I initial said golf was her job and she should just do it but I've worked with several people that have taken a step back from work for personal reasons.    It's not my job to judge her, just enjoy the good golf.

I didn't think the governing body went soft on her but others would "let her off" with a mini slap on the wrist.

Irrelevant really. My pure speculative comment was that she’s taking time away and her fairly recent escapades with golf may have a large role in this. She may feel that she let this victim role go to far and her conscience is telling her she wishes she had just owned up to her ‘accident’ and said she honors golf and respects the field and accepts the penalty and wishes her fans would do the same. And I’m purely speculating this but that may take a toll on her young self.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
