Another vote for just having fun. I take my 3 year old girl with me when we go now. She might swing the club 5 times the entire round. She mostly plays in the sand, building sand castles that I must rake down after every hole...haha. But if you ask her right now what she thinks about golf, she will enthusiastically tell you " I LOVE golf!"  She will even ask to go to the golf course and comes out and swings her clubs in the garage when Jacob and I are doing our super speed protocols. I also try to leave it on the tv in the background while we are playing with her doll house too...lol. She even knows some of the tour players names now. I think if you try to get too technical with them, it may push them away. I know my little girl will get frustrated if you start trying to show her grip and feet placement and she will walk away. So I just let her do whatever she wants to when she has the club in her hands.  It is amazing how much they pick up just watching you swing.

Ooh! I just figured out how to highlight a section of text! How cool!

I think this is a great point. The gift of human mimicry is real, and is certainly strong in the young. Just letting them observe will do a lot. It's when they come and ask for assistance that you know it's time to step in.

Started taking my now 4 1/2 year old with me to the range when he was 3 and then course a few times last year. I agree with what everyone else said, keep it fun. He loves mini golf and there’s a course at most ranges by us so while sometimes I’m aching to go work on my irons, I accept that I’m going to get some putting practice first as well.

Getting back out with my 5yr old this weekend and cant wait. Putter shipping for him first (needs a new one) then range.

He asked this morning if i can take him out on the course. He wants me to play the hole fully and he'll chip and putt.

Told him he's got 20 years to get me the claret jug or a green jacket :-P

Just have fun and I'm sure he'll learn some new words at the range. My boys always loved to putt.

Harvey  Penick did say start them from the putting green and work out to longer clubs.
