Regriped my ping eye 2 irons. I’ve been thinking about upgrading because I’ve lost a little distance. Then I played 9 with new grips my yardages came back and I had 3 kick in birdie putts!

I love my eye 2 irons. But all my friends tell me that I’m out of sinc. My loft on just about every iron is 4-6 degrees lower than modern irons. If I switch irons it’s going to be weird  I hit my 36 degree 7 iron 145-150 yards. I hit everything high with spin. And I’m used to them. Do modern clubs with the ne gewgaws really make that much of a difference?

So why not have a loft adjustment done? Go to a clubfitter and he can bend your irons, at least a little in a more beneficial loft, provided that's what you want!

I knew a guy who I played with in league back in the day. He had a set of Ping eye 2's, but sold them to move onto something else. His lament became, "Why did I ever get rid of my eye 2's"! He was a damn good golfer, and missed those clubs like nothing else!

It would be extremely hard to bend Ping eye 2's.

I wouldn’t dare. Lol. I sometimes laugh because I’m hitting 5 irons when someone else is hitting 7. But it’s a huge advantage playing in tournaments when the young people who try to use your club selection as what they should hit. Then they airmail the green by 20 yards. I’m just wondering if there is something better out there. Lol. Aren’t we all

I have four sets of irons one of which is an older set of Ping Eye 2s, they are great clubs although I have moved on to graphite shafts and Eye 2s are steel, they feel heavier. But if it isn't broken, and your game sounds like it isn't, why invest $500 to a $1000 for new irons?

I just re-read this thread, and think I misunderstood it and shot my mouth off! First off, I'm not sure what you mean by your lofts on the eye 2's being lower than modern irons. Generally, older irons have MORE loft than modern irons. It's what noted club designer Tom Wishon calls "Vanishing Loft Disease", when referencing the lower lofts of modern clubs in general, irons in particular. This is why today's 5 irons would be 3.5 irons back in the day! No wonder the rise of hybrids and rescue clubs.

And not to be callous, and I know they're your friends, but who cares what they think about YOUR golf game. If you like the clubs, play them! There's absolutely nothing wrong with them. I played in a league for years with a guy who had a set of eye 2's, played spectacular golf with them (he was really good), but sold them when the next big thing came along! We had to hear it at least 3 or 4 times a season, "Why did I ever sell my eye 2's!"

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
