I also bought new irons (fitted and awaiting delivery) and, like you, I found the Rogue X easiest to hit.  My current iron set is Hogan Apex Edge 3-PW and a Hogan SW (10 years old).  Whilst getting fitted on the launch monitor my Hogan 7 iron was carrying 125 yards with a good hit (yes, thats very short! 😥).

The Rogue X 7 iron IS delofted (a lot) but my shots with it were going a fair bit higher with a steeper angle at the end of the shot and carrying 160 yards.    I went ahead and bought the 4-PW Rogue X with a graphite shaft (synergy 50), but I also bought the Rogue X AW, GW and SW (46, 51 and 56 degree lofts).  That gives me a very light and very forgiving full set of irons with maybe only a 60 degree lob wedge needed (maybe).

I really like that I can get my 5 iron distance with a shorter club (Rogue X 7iron).   By adding the extra wedges I feel like I got the best of both worlds - help with distance and a set of wedges for the shorter shots.

It’s funny how many people that diss the Rogue X irons are pulling hybrids out of their bag. 25 years ago hybrids were considered old man or women’s clubs, however young men are using them now! LOL, Rogue X irons are in this 54 year old mans bag and they feel great! I love them, I have no problem gapping through wedges, I love the cog weight to crush the ball through the rough. Golf is and always will be a progressive sport in regards to equipment. Love what feels good and gives you that confidence, isn’t ALL about the minimum amount of strokes it takes from tee to hole? Let me know anybody else’s thoughts in regards to your experience with the Rogue X irons!

@billchao and @ChetlovesMer both had good points.

On the Rogue X, the ball goes a long way but some people have trouble with the yardages overlapping between clubs. A local golf shop had a monthly-get-together, and several of us hit a trade-in set of Rogue X irons. A 7 iron would range from 150 to 165 yards, and the six iron would range from 160 to 175 yards.

A Rogue X 4i might be good for a clearout club, but the whole set could give you a hazy distance yardstick.

As @IowaGreg suggested, take a look at the Cleveland Launchers. The CBX version is more a benevolent GI model, while the HB version is SGI. For the CBX, you might find the stock shaft is a bit light. A local fitter said he has sold quite a few Launcher CBX sets over the holidays. He said players would come in looking for TaylorMade or Callaway, and deciding on the Clevelands after a side-by-side test.

Finally, being you are 61, consider graphite shafts to save wear and tear on tendons. Graphites absorb the vibration much better than steel. Take a look at the Recoils and the lighter SteelFiber shafts - solid and with good balance.

100% agree, I have changed from stiff steel shafts to graphite just recently due to that very reason with my tendons. Arms started bruising pretty bad. What a difference!

I have golf mental issues, so hybrids are a problem for me. I look at the big head, and my brain makes me swing harder.

You might try to find a used very shallow face 4 or 5 hybrid with a small head.  I have older ones that I recently put back in my bag. Changed my ability to use hybrids and my second shot game. Best, -Marv

I agree with you. Get the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes. I sort of defended Roque X irons in the thread below. There are those however, who very simply look at the loft written on a spec sheet and immediately dismiss them.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I'm going to be the goofy one here. The Rogue X irons have an MPF of 669 (Game Improvement). The Rogue irons have an MPF of 878 (Ultra Game Improvement). The Ping G400 irons have an MPF of 788 (Super Game Improvement).

So if you've tried out the Rogue X and G400 I would try out the Rogue irons to see if you get any difference @daled . Graphite may be the way to go in your irons at your age. If you're serious about upgrading, checkout the Rogue irons.

If you're interested in the Malby Playability Factor of any irons you want to try, Google MPF ratings for irons, Golfworks has all the major brands. I hope this helps.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
