Guys, I'm here in Houston and sweat like a pig! One guy mention he hit 4 large buckets on the range and went through 2 gloves??? Get real, I' through a glove in 5 minutes! Rain gloves are the ONLY way to go. I get called "Tommy Two Gloves" more often than anything. One pair of rain gloves is worth 6 gloves during a round and you don't even have to take them off unless it bothers you putting. The wetter they are the firmer the grip Not sure why more people don't use them? Maybe it doesn't look cool??

How many of you golf with your significant other and how did they progress?
Jim Ludden replied to Spyder's topic in Golf Talk
You guys are missing out playing with your wives. I play during the week with the boys and then every weekend we play together 36 holes a day. I for one love it and don't understand why you wouldn't want to play with your wife. Looking at some of the comments about how your going to show her some things and if she gets it then you will take her out to the course????? Wow. And those are 12-18 HC showing your wife? I'm sure you are not the ones to be showing them anything at that HC level. I'm a lower HC than most and I wouldn't ever think about telling my wife what she's doing wrong as I can play, but I'm the last one to give her lessons. Leave that to the instructors ( it will help to not get her upset with you). BTW, she plays to a 7 and with no help from me. -
I am in Houston also and sweat profusely. Not a good combination down here. I use a full size bath towel for me to wipe with between every swing (not kidding). I also wear rain gloves down here in the Summer due to heavy sweating. Never have to take them off and it beats hanging 6 gloves on the cart trying to keep them dry!

CASTING: Extremely run-down driving ranges
Jim Ludden replied to GDRCasting's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
It was filmed at Kingwood country club and Deerwood and the Island courses. The range , I believe, was at the Learning center at Kingwood. It has since been torn down and a new Learning center in its place Btw, the 18 th hole in the movie were Roy kept hitting it into the water is actually our hole #4 at our Deerwood course and is the #1 HC hole. It plays like a par five! -
Sorry hit the post too soon. Mine are 11/2" long and 2 deg up for my frame. Keeping a still head is key in my opinion for taller folks and for me a full backswing is only to about 11-12 o'clock which is a full shoulder turn. If I go further back I just start loosing my coil and stored energy

I too am a big guy, 6'5" 230#. Always get fitted first. No since started off behind the eight ball with equipment not right

I'm kinda of freak about dirty clubs, irons, I have a saturated wet towel and clean the club after every shot

Whats the one shot that you hate most when you blow it ...
Jim Ludden replied to inthehole's topic in Golf Talk
Not hitting my chip shot to 2-3 feet of hole. Anything less is a bad shot. To me that's worse than 3 putting -
Hmmm, lets see, a 3 month break coming up a 36 wants to get to a 8 or so. Tough goal to achieve. What I suggest is before you commit to hitting the range for hours on end not having a clue as to what you are "practicing " . Take some lessons from a pro first then you have a idea of What to practice and some idea of how to do it. Then you go back to him in a week to ten days and do it again, work on it some more and repeat.

I'm a mid single digit player and am very outgoing, friendly guy. Everyone has a bad round where it's just not "working" that day on the course. That's golf. One day I was having one of those days and just couldn't hit a solid shot and was looking at a high 80's round. One of the fellows I was paired up with just couldn't contain himself and said "mind if I give you some advise on your swing?" I said, "yes I do mind as I work with my instructor for my game but I appreciate it anyway". This is up front and stops anymore wanting to help me out for the round and hopefully makes a point the maybe his advise isn't welcome. Most of the time i find these people are usually the mid handicaps that are the ones trying to help.

Sorry to hear about your pain. In my case I had the fusion surgery on L4-L5-&S; something in 1974 due to a motorcycle accident. I exhausted all the usual stuff (shots, electric therapy, pills, etc). Got to be so bad that I said " just do it and make the pain go away!" I didn't play golf till 20 years later so I can't comment on how bad it affect the game but I do know Golf does not bother my back at all. However, in reading one the OP I can concur that there is some flexibility issues with my swing. I play off 7 so decent golf can be had with a less than perfect swing I have to consciously make myself " finish my swing" every time due the fusions. It can be done but many times if I don't do it my ball blocks right due not completing the swing and leaving the club 80-90 degrees past impact instead of a full follow through swing.

how many people do you know that lie about their score?
Jim Ludden replied to tuffluck's topic in Golf Talk
Wow, all the talk on hear about not counting strokes is pretty funny. Not many even mentioned playing for money. I play every day of the week and usually play for some kind of money games be it $15 Nassau, $5 two downs, or $5 match play per hole. I guarantee you that all the strokes are counted correctly and that little "fluffing" of the ball will be called on you because all your playing buddies are watching. And yes, they are buddies but we all play by the rules or they are shut out of any bets and that is the worst way to be ostracized. -
What are your loft degrees in the wedges you carry?
Jim Ludden replied to awsmith0454's topic in Golf Talk
Mine are 64, 56, 50, & 54 with my 56 being the most versatile. the 64 is my pop up and stop wedge that i use 1 or 2 times pr round when I'm short sided. I don't hit many greens but I get up and down from anywhere! -
I use both a Bushnell laser and a Golf Buddy GPS. 95% of the time I use the Bushnell at my home course but the GPS I use on course I'm not familiar with because it shows end of fairways, hazards, etc

I'm with you, played yesterday at 9am in shorts was a balmy 80 Love South Texas in the Winter. My son is down and well play 36 today, tomorrow and 18 before he leaves Sunday. Doesn't get any better than that;-)

For me it's about $1400 a month that includes range, cart fees, beers daily of course!, and lunch daily. Does not include any golf trips or golf related purchases BUT for me it's worth it as I golf daily 350 time per year, (figure some rainout day in there, otherwise it would be 365!). Without a club membership I would easily spend double that.

Season? I play seven days a week year long:-P

What ball(s) is in your bag?
Jim Ludden replied to CentralFC's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Seems like a lot of you have 2-3 dozen balls in your bag at any given time. That a lot weight to be carrying lol For me I like ProV's. I carry two sleeves and generally after the round I have 12 balls as our rough is high and walking you just find them. Ps. Most found ball is ProV and Pinnacle -
Played 36 yesterday at my club in Houston (Deerwood). It was packed, everyone must've took off on the 4th. All the pins were US flags with holders at the side of the green, a nice touch for the 4th.

Hey don't forget about the mid-west. Something regional to start, Im in. I'm in Houston and my disclaimer is that I would give anything to hit the ball 300 and don't care if it's down the middle!
-
In Summer, large white towel for the sweat, my cigars, and a little birdie juice. Not to forget my KU ball marker
-
I agree, good tee shots don't necessarily equal good scores but increase the odds greatly to give you a chance to hit the green. Having a good up and down is great but your only going to do it 50% of the time so hitting out of the fairway is best.

I've got the best of all worlds. When I retired and moved to Houston my wife made me promise that if I retire I would play golf with her on the weekends (unless of course tourneys, boys we, etc). It was a no brainer for two reasons 1., I play every day for 5 days a week I'm with "the boys" and on the weekends I'm getting my ass kicked by my wife! (btw she played for Nebraska in the old Big 8 and plays BORING golf 13/14 fairways, 9-10GIR). I'm just happy my wife isn't a bigger bettor with me. PS- it is fun when we hook up with a twosome and they decide to let my wife in on the betting game. She wins 90% of the time and the guys are like "what did I just run into?"

I agree with you that it's never right to hit into anyone, ever. As for starting on the back for a nine hole round you should have waited till the people on nine tee made the turn. Our club won't allow unless there's a gap meaning no ones on the ninth tee. You have to remember that if you were the group who's on nine tee and see someone who wasn't in front of you before teeing off, it makes for upset people thinking someones jumping in front of them and likely results in a call to the pro shop. then the marshall comes out checks with the guy and then makes him wait till the turning groups pass.
