Are you a player or a practicer?
LongballPro replied to sean_miller's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm a player. Certainly not a practicer. I find when I start getting too mechanical or trying to find the perfect swing, things get worse. I definitely play with my instincts. Hitting a shot and reacting to the outcome of that shot, whatever that may be. It's worked so far. The only thing I usually spend time practicing is putting but even that is very limited -
What's the hottest weather you've ever golfed in?
LongballPro replied to divot dave's topic in Golf Talk
I played in Nashville 2 summers ago and they had a couple of weekends that the temperatures were pushing 100 degrees with heat indexes pushing 110 -
If I'm struggling off the tee I will go to the 4 iron. Sometimes the 3 iron. Nothing like hitting a solid stinger long iron 230 to build your confidence

1. Get putting average to 28 per round 2. Improve distance control with wedges 3. Shoot a bogey free 9 holes 4. Lower my giveback percentage after birdies/eagles

You need to check out Hermitage Golf Club and Gaylord Springs. At Hermitage, they have 36 holes. The President's Reserve course is a resort style course. Very well maintained! The General's Retreat course used to host an LPGA event. Gaylord Springs is a links inspired course. They hosted a Champions Tour event for about 10 years. It's a fun course to play. The entire area went through severe flood damage in May 2010 but they all recovered very quickly and were still great to play. Sorry I don't know anything about the city courses. I played all of my rounds in the surrounding areas

I seem to have a fourth type of grip
LongballPro replied to Kobey's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
The short game is all about feel. There is no one sure way to grip the club. That's why you see so many different putting setups -
Definitely give that guy a plaque! What an amazing accomplishment! I have come close myself, 265 yard par 4 in a scramble event playing with my dad my uncle and his friend. My buddy and his family were in the group ahead and watched the shot. I found out when I got to the green that the stick kept the ball out of the hole!

The one person I actually know that's playing in q school is leading after 3 rounds at the Pinewild (Magnolia) site. His name is John Hahn. Helluva player from Kent State University

Opinions on Taylor Made R9 and Burner 2.0 irons
LongballPro replied to JohnnyB's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I've been playing the R9 TP Irons for just over a year now. I absolutely love the feel of the long irons. The 3 iron is my bailout club. If I'm struggling to find the fairway, I pull that out! I'm a big hitter so the 240 yard 3 iron that I know I can put in the fairway is very comforting. I tend to struggle with my distance control on the shorter irons but I've been looking to go to forged short irons. I highly recommend the R9 irons! The clubface seems to be very hot, even on off center hits -
I'm curious to see what the judging criteria was for this list. Longaberger, Inverness, Firestone, Muirfield, OSU Scarlet, Canterbury, Sand Ridge, there is even a TPC course in Ohio...In no particular order of course. I would put probably these 8 in the top 10

I had a great year this year! I basically took a couple of years off only playing 10 round in almost 3 years (long story short, i got burned out and had no motivation to play the game). Last year I was out of town working and was able to buy all new equipment and found a tournament series and the fire was reignited! This year I became an assistant pro at a club working under an amazing mentor. I passed my PAT. I took first in an unofficial modified stableford event (T-1 if stroke play), during which I recorded an eagle and 6 birdies. Unfortunately I only had 4 pars which resulted in an even par 71. And then just last week, I shot 68 to break 70 for the first time in almost 10 years. This has been an absolutely incredible year for me and I can't wait for the spring!

Tale of two 9s : Most lopsided front/back scores
LongballPro replied to hacker23's topic in Golf Talk
I had a 53-38 one time in a junior tournament...the most frustrating one though was 34-42. It may be only 8 strokes, but to start the round 2 under and finish at 76 was very frustrating -
From the looks of it, and this is just me rewinding and pausing youtube, but it looks like your takeaway may be to far to the outside. I would recommend not taking such a big back swing. It looks like the combination of those 2 leads to bad position starting the downswing and is giving you the inconsistency. Any other thoughts out there?

Fatty putter grip. I went ahead and did it.
LongballPro replied to xxsoultonesxx's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I went to the Super Stroke Lite and have seen a great improve! Definitely a fan! -
38-34 for a 1 over 72. Gave away some strokes by not making putts inside of 7 feet. Hit the driver extremely well today

Little Mountain CC or Stonewater GC?
LongballPro replied to DaSportsGuy's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Here at Aurora, we have received quite a bit of rain. It doesn't surprise me that Little Mountain was wet. And I agree with iacas, I think you are a little harsh on the layout. Maybe the conditions affected your judgement on that and I can understand why -
Just a thought...try moving the ball back towards the middle of your stance a bit. You may be hitting the shot too much on the upswing. This will help promote a draw and less backspin

Little Mountain CC or Stonewater GC?
LongballPro replied to DaSportsGuy's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Aurora Golf Club But seriously, either one is a good choice -
Paradox, Great post! And for the record, if anyone bothered reading up on the quote itself, Nicklaus said he will be holding specific events with the course set up in these conditions. He's not talking about setting up the course for daily play. I guess MY whole point is...for all of you golf "purists", drop the 3, 4, 5 piece golf balls. Put away the modern clubs. Let's go back to playing with the niblick and featherie golf ball. Because after all...that's how the game was meant to be played right?

At my course, the first hole is a 465 yard par 5...out of bounds left and right. 2 elevation changes, a bunker protecting the top of the hill, a river cutting through the fairway, and bunkers protecting an elevated green...not to mention the out of bounds pinching in the further you go out. Needless to say, most players don't start off well. However, the way I approach the tee shot, as I do every shot, is to totally block out whatever trouble presents itself. I picture flying my tee shot down into the landing area to have a nice short/mid iron to the green. And it has paid off tremendously! I've never had so many eagles in a year in my life thanks to this hole. So the best advice I can give is to tune out the negatives of the shot and focus entirely on splitting the fairway. Note: I don't usually like hitting balls before I play. I lace'em up and let'em fly!
