  3. Never follow a bad shot with a stupid one. Worse often comes as a result of stupid.
  4. Pace of play isn't (or at least shouldn't be) about how long it takes to finish a round. That is an effect of pace of play. Pace of play is about being ready to hit when it's your turn, knowing your relief options so you can proceed without delay, hitting a provisional ball if your first may be lost so as to prevent having to return to the tee, perhaps not taking the full five minutes to which the rules otherwise entitle you to search for a lost ball, yielding to faster groups if your skill level demands a little more time to play the course, etc.
  5. 1) I can't believe it took a page-and-a-half for someone to bring up Caddyshack. "The man's a menace!" 2) While I don't take music with me out on the course, and I always put my phone into "silent" mode, if someone in my group or another wants to listen to music while they play, it doesn't bother me. When I have been with someone playing music, I've even enjoyed it, provided a) it's not overly loud, b) it's decent music, and c) the tempo has to be down. No speed metal, please. Wreaks havoc with my transition.
  6. I think there is a perception that resort courses, in order to attract guests, often have more style than substance. Or sometimes not even much style, just an architect's name.
  7. @cart7: Huh. I grew up a couple miles from Yorktown and never heard that before. I shall go to bed less ignorant than when I woke up.
  8. Ninjas are outside agencies (see definition). According to rule 27-1(c), exception 2, "if it is known or virtually certain that the original ball... has been moved by an outside agency... he may proceed under the applicable rule." In this case, that would be rule 18-1, which calls for the ball to be replaced without penalty. As the ball would no doubt be unfit for play, the player could replace the ball under rule 5-3. On a related note, would a zombie be considered an outside agency or a loose impediment?
  9. I've been using GigaGolf clubs for years with few problems. When I had a problem, they fixed it. No complaints whatsoever.
  10. Same penalty as playing from a Wrong Place (Rule 20-7). Seems fair to me.
  11. I feel pretty safe is saying that he's not doing this because he needs the money. Perhaps he's simply accomplished all that he believes he can (or wants to) as an amateur.
  12. Four birdies in nine holes. Bogeyed the other five. Added one more on the back.
  13. Age 35. On-again, off-again lifter since college. I've never been a really strong guy, particularly in the legs, so lifting (particularly squats and deadlifts) has really helped my swing by building a more stable lower body. Also, I've had some of my best rounds when my legs were a little fatigued. I usually attribute this to either a) a quieter lower body or b) lowered expectations. If anybody wants a Fitocracy invite, PM me. The Golf group needs people. Edit: Forgot to answer the original question: about 3 times a week.

  16. I DVR'd the matches last night, and was unable to avoid hearing about the Woods/Stricker result before I watched it. Knowing the outcome, I was still interested in how it happened. Here's my observations: 1) Adam Scott was playing really well. He and Choi didn't make many mistakes, but when they did, they almost always recovered well. Scott's bunker shot to a few inches around the 9th or 10th hole is a perfect example. 2) Without a detailed analysis of every hole, I thought the poor play was shared relatively evenly between Tiger and Stricker. Tiger put at least a couple of short-iron approaches too deep, and left Stricker in bad positions. The tee shot at the third comes to mind, where Tiger put in the bunker over the green. Clearly they were both off their games, and were never really able to string enough good shots together to manage a birdie, much less put any pressure on their opponents. And would someone tell Paula Creamer that Tiger has her sunglasses?
  17. This phenomenon isn't exclusive to golf. It happens with any sport. "If they hadn't muffed that punt in the third quarter..." "If so-and-so had hadn't dropped that fly ball..." etc. Same principle. You can't assume that the game would have played out the same under different circumstances.

  19. Liberal golf: Any drives over 150 yards have to be rolled back by 10%; over 200 yards, 25%; over 250, 40%. If you hit the ball 300 yards, you're disqualified. There is no fairway: it would be unfair to give straight hitters a further advantage. The highest score has the "honor" on the next tee box. Conservative golf: The player with the most expensive equipment wins; clearly he has too much invested to fail, and it might take down the whole golf economy.
  20. Dear Philadelphia Phillies, As a Cardinals fan I would like to thank you for playing to win in a game which was of little importance to you. Next week I will be rooting against you with everything I've got, but for now, kudos!
  21. I know it was Mickelson at Winged Foot. Similar circumstances, different languages, basically the same statement. I was trying to draw a parallel/make a joke. I thought the, "maybe it was someone else," would have been a tip off. I apologize for my fail. /OT
  22. For those wondering what Bryan SD2 is referring to, Roberto DiVicenzo signed for a 4 on a hole where he made 3 in the final round of the Masters. The higher score stood. He lost to Bob Goalby by one stroke. He was reported to have said afterward, "I'm... such an idiot." Or maybe that was someone else.
  23. Yorktown was designed by Bob Goalby; not sure about Tamarack. I've played two Dye courses, once each within a month or two a few years ago. I played the Sycamore course at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis and the Kampen course at Purdue University. I was having two very different ball-striking days, so my comparison might be a little colored by that. The Sycamore course seemed challenging, but very fair. With the exception of two holes it wasn't "tricked out" or anything. I was pull-hooking everything when I played the Kampen course, and the tees I chose were about 800 yards longer, so it seemed much more difficult. Certainly it has more of Dye's famous waste areas/bunkers.
  24. Our championship is just one round, stroke play. (It's a public course, so the "club" is mostly members of the various leagues.) They have three men's flights and two women's flights. Prizes (merchandise credit at the pro shop) are awarded for the low gross in each flight and the four low net scores excluding the low gross winner. Low gross also gets a trophy. I've played the last three years, always in the middle flight, and generally shot poorly. I think my score has been within a shot or two of 90 every year. This year's tournament was this past Saturday, and I was again in the middle flight. I shot a 78, matching my all-time low round, and won the low gross. I would have been T2 in the net competition. It was a feast-or-famine kind of round. I had four birdies and five bogeys on the front nine, finishing with five birdies, three pars, nine bogeys and a double bogey. I played the four par 5s in 5-over. The longest putt I made for birdie was about 10-12 feet, and I only had one other good look at birdie where I didn't make the putt. All in all, the score looked a lot better than the round felt. It had the feel of a round that could turn sour at any moment. I'm more proud of the fact that I kept it reasonably together all the way to the clubhouse than of making five birdies in the round.
