Yes. Someone posted in this thread that Zach Johnson had never won a major, and then I happened to see that the article mentioning Louis’ withdrawal -by ‘The Sporting News’, no less-mentioned that he has placed highly in majors, but has never won one. .... and now it’s no longer funny 😕

Probably only of note to me and a few others since I like to follow him... one more on the subject of players who have ‘never’ won a major... http://www.sportingnews.com/us/golf/news/pga-championship-2018-louis-oosthuizen-withdraws-back-injury-kelly-kraft/t3igf9ge63ih1rwm0rxpjf3qm Hopefully he gets it sorted, but back stuff can mess you up long term, and this isn’t his first time with back issues. One of my favorite swings to watch, and almost always shows up in majors. (Maybe he’ll eventually win one! LOL)

I’ll admit that my prediction is on the optimistic side. But nothing so far has indicated that he can’t get back to top 5 or #1, even. He’s certainly trending that way, overall. It’s not ridiculous at all. Perhaps a tad optimistic. But very plausible and would not be surprising to many (excepting mostly virulent Tiger haters), considering the solid start to his comeback so far.

I will say that now/soon is the best time to do this match. With Phil having a good year, and Tiger still working his way back, their world ranking should be similar. By this time next year Tiger will be top-5 in the world, if not #1 again. Phil could still be up there, but the odds are he will be a bit lower.

I’m also in the minority, seemingly and I like to watch women’s golf. A lot of people, especially better players, seem to dislike watching women play since they definitley can play almost as good or better (or think they can). I’m still in awe of what they can do out there, and I do like to watch. I prefer to watch the men’s tours, but I certainly don’t turn up my nose at a ladies tournament.

Tiger pooped in his hand on that one. Let’s see a bounce back birdie, here!

Yeah, it took a while the first time I went to a tour event in person to get used to looking at the correct height for hit balls, particularly tee shots. It seems like they go maybe 20-30 feet higher on average than what I see from myself and other amateurs. Of course there was some variation, but generally these guys were hitting it pretty high. I seem to recall Tiger, Lee Westwood, Louis O, and G-Mac at the time (2013) hitting it pretty damn high, even compared to the rest of the guys that day.

How many holes/rounds do you keep a ball in play?
sofingaw replied to jimnm's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I have no set timeline for replacement. I’ll play one until I lose it (normally happens first) or, it gets badly scuffed by a cart path or tree. I have definitley played a whole round with one ball more than once, but I don’t know if I have ever played the same ball for more than 18 holes straight, since after each round, the balls go either into the ‘gamer’ pocket, or the ‘shag’ pocket and get mixed with all other balls in said pockets. Certainly some in the ‘gamer’ pocket have more than 18 holes on them. Perhaps much more. -
Phil taking the PGA this year, confirmed. Just look at that swag! Tiger and DJ running scared up against that!

Of course everyone is correct that instruction is most beneficial, and you made it very clear that you are already aware of that. I’ll answer your question as it relates to the clubs, since that is what you’re asking about. The clubs you hit the worst should be replaced first, IMO. If you slice or worm-burn every drive, but can generally keep your irons in front of you, then by all means, look at a new driver first. If you can normally keep it in play off the tee, but can’t get the ball in the air reliably with your longer irons, then a new set of more forgiving, fit to you irons may be better to look at first. I would definitley not worry about wedges right away, and certainly your putter last. Unless possibly if putting is the worst part of your game by far... probably not even then. Whatever direction you go in, though, the most important part of getting new gear is to be properly fitted. If you aren’t going to get fitted, I would advise against new sticks at all, until you do.

Jimenez keeps the lead with an up and down day. Hit some shaky pitches, but also dropped some bombs on the greens. Par was a good score today with the wind picking up. Watson held the solo lead early on his back 9, but pulled a Tiger and kind of lost it. Still in the mix though, 3 back. Langer also faded a bit, but still right there. Lots of others still within reach, too. The conditions (and some wonky play) kept anyone from running away with it. Looking forward to Sunday!

I mean, the odds that there is ‘more’ to this story are fair, to good, based on the nature of celebrity in general, and pro sports specifically. Many pro athletes who ‘take time off’ have something fairly major going on behind the scenes. However, there is absolutely NO evidence of anything other than what she said in this case, so the specific speculation is all grasping at straws, without any basis. Hopefully it is just a hiatus in order to reset herself. Best of luck to her!

Don’t i know it! Yeah, the swing is a work in progress. I definitley know I can’t ‘buy’ a swing, but maybe something a bit heavier and stiffer will help to keep me from wrapping it around my neck on the backswing? thanks @allenc and @Grizvok for the advices! I would say my right side misses are maybe a 10-15 yard push. While not great, I wouldn’t call them extreme. My hooks can be MASSIVE though. I can hook an 8i 30-40 yards offline with a swing that I would have called ‘mediocre’, vice abysmal. It just takes off kind of straight, and then screams left sometimes. Yeah I need to try some different sticks before buying.

Big names making moves today. 2nd round play suspended due to darkness, which happened because of a fog delay earlier in the round. Most players, including all the leaders did finish. Jimenez and Ames leading at -9, Watson, Vijay, Langer, Monty, Pernice, Perry, Lehman, Triplett, Sluman, Lyle, McGinley all in the top 12, within 4 of the lead. Faxon rallied to probably make the cut, Looks like Sir Nick and Brandel will miss the cut. Could be an exciting weekend!

Hey I know you! What up man? Lol

Hey all! So, I’m convinced that I’m in need of new (stiffer) shafts in my irons. This is based on a few data points: 1) I have a two way miss that I am having great difficulty correcting. Either a push straight right, or a hard overdraw/hook. I read that some who have too-flexible/light shafts can have this miss pattern. Seems to fit my situation. If I S L O W my swing down, I can straighten it a bit, but it feels unnatural, like I’m putting the brakes on my swing. I’d rather swing full. I feel like I’m walking on a razor with the ‘right’ speed, and I’m thinking it would help to have something else that I can’t overpower so easily, and so I can commit to each shot. Basically, 2 out of 10 shots go straightish. 4 go left, 4 go right. I do not have a problem with contact anymore. I get it ‘up’ plenty easily, and don’t hit it excessively fat or thin very often these days. (Just a little fat/thin, haha). About 8-10 times or more per round I hear myself say ‘yeah I hit it good, it just went way left/right!’ 2) I’m 6’2 with about an 88mph 6i swing speed. Carry it about 175 or so. Distance is not my problem. Even losing just a bit would be OK if I start hitting it a good deal straighter. 3) I’m playing stock Ping AWT R-flex shafts in my G15’s. These shafts weigh 99g. Pretty light compared to almost any Stiff flex shaft out there. The ball launches high, and I do like that. But if something stiffer would drop the flight a bit, but keep me straighter... I’m interested. When I bought the irons new, my swing was (more) crap, and I couldn’t generate too much clubhead speed. The salesman/fitter said I could go with Stiff graphite shafts, but since the R’s were steel, they would play ‘stiff enough’, anyway. Probably/possibly true back then (2012), definitley not the case now. So... I have tried the online fitting sites from True Temper and KBS, and though I can play with the answers to the questions a bit, I get vaguely consistent results. Normally I’m guided toward KBS Tour S, KBS Tour V (Stiff), KBS C-Taper Lite, or Project X 6.0/5.5’s. The problem is, I have no idea what each of these shafts would really do for me. My number one goal is to significantly straighten my ballflight and tighten my dispersion. Secondly, I would like to keep as much distance as possible. Trajectory is of less importance to me, but medium to high sounds good. Of course the best thing to do would be to go get fitted for shafts. I could answer all my questions in an hour or two. Unfortunately, where I live now, (Japan) there are not any places that I know of to go get fit. Plus the language barrier could be an issue. Does anyone have any specific recommendations or experiences on any of the shafts I mentioned, or any others that you know to be similar, or that may help me achieve my goals? Especially interested if your numbers are similar to mine. Most of the shafts I listed are about 110g in weight. Seems like 10g up won’t throw me off too much. Does that sound reasonable? If I can, I will figure out how to get fit here in Japan, but I am also browsing eBay for shaft sets and have come close to pulling the trigger a couple of times. I just want to avoid any extremely costly mistakes, if possible. Thank you for reading my novel, and I appreciate any feedback. I do have a ‘my swing’ thread if seeing me swing my 6i would be helpful.

Notables in the field: Tom Watson, Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Vijay Singh, John Daly, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, Brad Faxon, David Frost, Kenny Perry. Lots of other great names including Major winners, as well. Im gonna try to watch as much as I can! Oh, also Brandel Chamblee is playing.

The key for me re: warming up is making sure not to overdo it. Based on the marathon range sessions I have when I’m not about to play, I have a limit of about 100-150 balls hit consecutively before performance suffers a lot. I figure I’m going to hit between 50 and 70 (yikes!) full shots in a round, so I shouldn’t hit more than 50-60 balls max to warm up. Gets me warm/grooved, but doesn’t wear me out.

Pretty sick! Good stuff.
