  1. I improved my score quickly by spending time on putting and chipping. It wasn't until I read LSW that I figured out what these crazy forum guys were talking about. We can all (assuming normal physical condition) improve putting and chipping quickly because it doesn't take as much effort or skill as improving full swing. Improvement happens faster. PGA stats currently have Kevin Na making 20% of 20 foot putts. For most folks, full swing improvement takes longer, more physical effort and skill. That is why the crazy forumites suggest folks should spend more time on full swing , all things being equal. It takes longer for improvement. But, it is important long term improvement-If I can get more GIR's or NGIR's because my approach shots are on the Green in regulation or within 20 yards, I'll have a better chance to score more pars and bogeys. I can be a great putter and chipper but if my first putt on a par four is for 6, my scores are not gonna fall long term That doesn't touch on the importance of course management but that's all in the book
  2. I play as a single whenever my wife decides to pass. Our muni trys to make foursomes and it usually works out. DavePO43 mentioned trying to play the same tees. While I prefer the whites I'll play the blues to fit in. Surprisingly, many strangers I meet prefer the whites. It makes a difference. and often a duo or threesome do not feel comfortable golfing with a stranger. I'll give them two or three holes then ask to join them, not play through. Normally nowhere to go. and I get to chat while waiting for folks ahead of us. That usually works out.
  3. I'm old, OCD and very methodical. Recognize speed of play so make a few decisions to not slow down the strangers I'm often with: -Bring my push cart with me, when looking for a "probably" lost ball. Not walking 50 yards back to a club and another 50 back to the ball (and if I find myself a ways away-drop my hat at the ball so its not lost again) I have a habit of following others ball trajectory and if feasible let them know where it is. If in my walking line to my ball, I will look for others balls. -play ready golf-I usually get to the next tee well ahead of playing partners. I play the whites...I see no point waiting for 20 cappers to hit off the tips, waiting for the green to clear, on a 400 + yard course. I can't stop people who want to play from any tee box and whose shot shape is one or two fairways left or right. -Get there early enough to do what I need to do-I play with guys who are singles , in power carts, who bring a small bar with them, ice , shaker,-drink martini's all round, and never slow down place of play. They are ready to play at start time. -mark my ball or play a color-I know what ball I'm playing-many don't
  4. 66 here. I now believe "bad score excuses" are another form of course management techniques and should be added to your golf notes. You have full permission to use "Age". Its not an excuse, its a reason, when you need it.
  5. I'll driver between 175 and 225 , so 200 is probably my spot. My favourite course is a par 68 with 7 par 3's. The whites are about 5,100. From there I can break 80. Even got a 5 over this season. My wife and I play the whites. On my own , with walk ons, I let the testosterone set in so play wherever that group choose. They usually choose blues or sometimes blacks. That becomes painful. I'll still break 90 but those folks just shouldn't be there. They don't hit driver even my length, and its a painful day watching them loose a dozen balls each. For most of us hackers, Choice of tees seems to be testosterone driven. Score nor risk reward enters the equation
  6. Had a blast of winter. commuting is brutal. -5F/-21C right now. As jetfan1983 says, April is just around the corner.
  7. If its is really beat up, I'll leave it on the ball washer. Otherwise its the water hazard or mystery rough
  8. Interesting. The last couple of years when I've been spending any practice time with a golf ball, focusing on a specific target. (Wedges into fake greens) Maybe it is in LSW or some other TST material. I see golf like any other throwing or racket sport. I don't think about my mechanics when I throw a ball to first base, or hit a shot with a tennis racket, I just focus on the target. I've gotten competent inside 100 yards, Now that I can make contact with the golf ball a little more consistently, I'm gonna spend more time on longer club full swing practice this winter and learn to focus on a target further away.
  9. I think that's what it is. Both charge the reader but I couldn't see it in finder, lol
  10. Thanks Vinsk. Got up this morning, tried a different cord-voila! the kobo reader showed up in the finder list. That simple. Damn.
  11. Folks, I use an older Kobo e-reader. I have been purchasing through the reader via wi fi. An acquaintance has given me a thumb drive with hundreds and hundreds of ebooks I am a Mac user. I am attempting to move books to my kobo I have found instruction on doing this ...but...once connected to my mac, I can't find the kobo e-reader Any suggestions?
  12. Last game of the season. Went out as a single, ended up playing with friends of my wife. Hit a par 3 in regulation...pin placement was on the other side of a steep rise. Took me four shots to get the ball over the ridge. Embarrassing. Damn thing kept coming back to my feet.
  13. My wife started with me 8 years ago. Took a few lessons and was hooked...but...she really got golf crazy when she joined two ladies leagues at a muni we play. She is out twice a week with them once with me and is no longer afraid to book and golf by herself. Got herself from high 20's to a 19 this year. She's thrilled with that.
  14. As a 20 I agree. I'm 66 and still want to lower that number, bought the book and this winter (starting next week) am going to practice and get a few more yards on my full swing shots. My short game and putting are not going to get much better or better enough to give me 5 strokes. Maybe I have drunk the cool-aid , but I have seen that GIR is a way better place to lower my score. Th alternative is ok-play for GIR +1-and live with 91-95. Its closer to par than 102
  15. vote was yes. My guess is that the non alcoholics all voted no. Drunk driving laws are like locks...they work for honest folks. If I drink, I will probably drink and drive...so I have stopped drinking. Once I black out all bets are off.
  16. This. Seems as a matter of course, at any course, the furthest tees hit first, while us mortals always waiting behind a Tree to not get hit from that wild tips shot. One we spot that, my wife and I just hit, then wait and watch while another duffs left or right. Sub 5 golfers are excused, their GIR's make up for the wait, as long as the mortals keep up.
  17. LSW-chapter 6-#7-Not gonna think about it, just gonna do it.
  18. I'm older and not playing that long, 8 years. I have concentrated on accuracy as that seemed to me, how I could improve faster. Finally broke 20 this year. But...my accuracy has maxed out. I need to make more GIR's. I am often 20 to 50 yards short Bought LSW...read it...made no changes. End of season, read it again...gonna buy a can of Eric's foot spray...work on speeding up my back swing...and finding the sweet spot.
  19. I was fitted for a driver three winters ago-ended up with a medium golf pride grip, Accra shaft and a 12.5 degree KZG head-all in $340 which included three hours with fitter. He usually charges $125 for kzg irons and wedges.
  20. Did not buy in at first, even after reading LSW the first time...my short game improved way faster than my long game...now I'm reading it again, near the end of my season...spent most summer practice on short game and putting...still found myself short in regulation....Separation value...got it. My long game needs to get longer...It will save me more strokes. Gonna spend the winter with Eric's can of spray on my club face. and like others are saying about when I get close...depending what iron I got in the bag, using whatever I gotta use, in the air or bump and run, to get in on the green....been spending the last two winters just hitting targets at the indoor range with anything from a 60 degree to a 6 iron. I just need to convert more NGIR to GIR
  21. LOL, I get my weekly practice during actual play.
  22. I am not a long hitter (driver runs 185-210) and I was constantly playing the blues (mens tees) whenever paired with other men. This year, gave it up. Moved to the whites, wherever I play. I record my handicap every 9 and 18 I play. Been out 57 times. I may have taken 5 mullies this season. Started seeing better scores at every place I play. Not as many bunkers, even getting a few pars. My informal hcp (just something I found for the phone) has moved to low 19's instead of high 22's. My con was that my short game would make up that lack of distance off the blues. I just feel better about golf
  23. I read somewhere to find a club that works and stick with it. I have a 52, 56 and a 60. Went to a local range which has a practice bunker and hit balls out of there for 4 total hours and discovered I can hit out most of the time with all three with a little practice. Distance from the pin, location next to a steep lip, changes the club selection . Even a putter if its got no lip
