Bogey Golfers Only (Index 16-22) / Breaking 90 Topic
PJCdude replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
Well, shot a 102 (53-49). Felt like it was a lot worse but I avoided any really bad blow ups. Putting was horrific. 38 putts but a lot were missed 3 footers after solid chips. Wedges and my tight Lies 16 degree wood were the only positives. (For the most part) On one par 3 I actually hit a solid 6 iron just left of the green and almost chipped in, but then also missed the 3 foot comebacker for par. Lots of OOB and topped irons. I think it is due to an early release causing me to hit thin or pull long clubs off the tee. back to the drawing board. PS Also, I'm a 23 and this round reminded me that I probably shouldn't be posting in this thread yet. -

Thanks man. Let's see what happens tomorrow. I'm replacing my 52 degree with my old 54 degree tomorrow. Doesn't fill that gap to my AP1 Gap Wedge as well but I'm soooooooo much more comfortable hitting it. -

Played last week and hoping to get out Saturday if weather holds up. Was playing my usual hacker style on the front but then had my first EVER greenside up and down par from a bunker (and it was high lip short side etc. My SM5 K grind is a godsend) on 8 and another up and down birdie from about 30 yds on 9 a short par 5. 46 at the turn. I'm feeling good. Definitely breaking 90 today. 53 on the back. Playing partners shot 88 and 89. at least I broke 100 -

ive been there. My next round I parred the first 3 holes...then fell off a cliff and shot 102. Id say take it one shot at a time. Keep your expectations low but still be confident in your stroke. btw 91 is still my personal best :) -
Congrats dude....my avatar is the closest I've gotten. Was a slight pull-fade that rolled behind the cup...for a split second from 150 yds away I thought I had it.

As a guy who just had a child (my second) born 6 days ago I'm real happy for Willett. I don't think I'll be allowed to play in this next month or two after her birth, let alone fly across the Atlantic to go win a major. Good for him.

Picked Day in my one and done pool so pulling for him. I have nothing personal against Spieth and don't even mind if he wins I just want a little more drama to end the tourney. Going into today I thought it would have been cool to see Rory get the Grand Slam too but his putting killed him.

Why is LW usually less bounce than SW?
PJCdude replied to PJCdude's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I know, I'm just why the lower bounce is usually on the higher lofted wedge? To me it makes more sense on a lower loft -

Understood, but I'm assuming you can use anything from 54-60 out of sand -
I know the ultimate answer will be do what works for you but I like hearing people's opinions here. I'm probably gonna roll with a 54.08 58.11 combo but most people seem to have their 54-56 degree wedge higher bounce and their 58-60 lower. I would think that courses with former bunkers are either a)crappier courses or b) it just rained. In those conditions I figure you wouldn't need a ton of loft. I would want a softer landing on a fast green which I seem to find on courses with fluffier sand. Tell me what I'm missing here.

Probably the back 9 of my personal best 91 (have shot it twice) the first time. It was a 42. Up until that day, I had never shot better than 48 on 9 holes. For 10-14 I had 5 bogies in a row. Doubled 15, got pissed that my streak was broken and then parred the last 3 holes. One of the few times I feel like I really didn't care about score and just tried to enjoy the game and I shot way better than usual.

What Do You Do - Chance to Beat Your All Time Birdie Streak
PJCdude replied to bkuehn1952's topic in Golf Talk
Never had two birdies in a row (did birdie 6 and 8 though in the same round with a double on 7) but have parred 16,17,18 and then 1 and 2 in my next round. I count that as a 5 par streak. I'm so jealous of everyone else in this thread. -
I, like everyone else will definitely play the woulda coulda shoulda game after rounds. Especially when I thought I was gonna break 90 for the first time but 3 putted 14 and 15 (Both were from about 15 feet, but I hit it way too hard trying to get par (on 14) or birdie (on 15) and missed the comebackers) However, I had two of my best scoring 9 hole rounds late in the season (44 and 46) and on both of those rounds I hit 1 or 2 skulled iron shots that happened to be mid irons on trouble free fairways that rolled up to the green. I hit some good shots (for me) in those rounds too, but I sometimes think about those terrible shots that worked out in my favor and makes me further understand that golf is a game of misses and all about taking the big number out of play....especially as a 20+ handicap.

50 yd half SW. Only partial wedge distance that is almost always dead on and also only shot I hit that I rarely screw up. Smashing drives is fun but I get way more aroused off sticking wedges close to the hole.

I feel like varying practice is good, but taking time with one club and working on just technique is valuable. I usually like to break hour-hour and a half practice sessions (when I have adequate time which is less frequent these days) into 3 parts: PART 1: WARM-UP/SWING TECHNIQUE I'll usually start with half wedge shots, making my way up to full shots and thinking about technique. I'll then take an iron (usually 7i) and focus on whatever swing keys I've been using lately, sometimes film, sometimes not but really spend time working out the kinks and THINKING about my swing. I'll then try the same swing with a long club (usually 2h) and driver. PART 2: SHORT GAME I'll then go over to the green and spend 20 minutes-half hour chipping, pitching and getting out of sand. PART 3: PLAY THE COURSE This is what Johns Hopkins was talking about and how I feel like you can take your range game to the course. I'll pick a course I usually play in my head and just estimate yardage etc and hit Driver-7i-chip, Driver-hybrid-Wedge etc. and follow what I would do on course. I try to forget what I was thinking about in Part 1 and concentrate more on pre-swing routine. I'm no expert but this approach helped me shave 5 1/2 strokes this past year and I've seen many other people use it.

I am the type of athlete who was a workhorse and always devoted himself as much as possible to improvement. It worked for wrestling, MMA and Rugby. The thing with golf, is now I have a 19 month old and another child coming in April. I am blessed to have an amazing family but in terms of golf, it definitely will affect my answers here: 1. How good is good enough when it comes to your game of golf? I dropped from 29 to 23.8 this year and am proud of that. This next year, my goal will be to maintain that handicap and moving forward I want to at least get below a 20. 2. At what point would you become satisfied with your game? A quote I learned from my HS wrestling coach after a big win: " Content, but never satisfied." That being said, I think it's realistic for me to be a sub-bogey golfer and I'll be somewhat satisfied when I break 90 (have shot 91 twice) . 3. How much time would you be willing to devote to the game of golf to get your game to a level that would satisfy you? I devote as much time as possible that doesn't strain any important relationships. As much as I love golf, I am a husband and father first.

Slow and Fast Range Practice Techniques
PJCdude replied to gregsandiego's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Both are best. I don't follow this plan always but here's some food for thought: http://golfstateofmind.com/better-practice-drills-for-golf/ -
They had a sweet deal going this past summer during weekdays and I think maybe weekend afternoons too. It was 45 bucks for a cart, 18 holes, lunch and 2 beverages. Could be redeemed in clubhouse or cart girl. I used to also consider Van Cortlandt a hone course of mine too, but that deal kept me coming back all summer.

My home course is Pelham/Split Rock in the Bronx, NY. It's two different courses and I usually play Pelham (the easier of the 2) Par 71, about 6200 yds, 69.6 rating and 117 slope from the middle. It's wide open but lots of bunkers and some tricky greens. I'm still relatively new to golf but I've played this course enough to really appreciate the details in the course design.

Depends on a ton of things. First off, what is the loft of your PW? Most people recommend 4-6 degrees of separation between wedges. So if you're PW is 48 degrees, then 50 is probably too close. It it's 46 degrees, then a 50 and 56 might work. Also, don't be afraid to visit a store like Golfsmith and hit some wedges on the launch monitor to see what lofts you hit well. It sounds like you're a beginner and most people recommend not starting with too many wedges, but when you're ready, If you have room for another wedge in your bag, you also might want a LW. In that case you could go 52-56-60 or 50-54-58 or copy me and go 50-54-60. There is not a one size fits all answer to what wedges to carry. Long story short, figure out the loft of your PW, take it from there and mind the gaps.
