  1. Why don't we just cancel the 08 tour and give tiger all the prize money?
  2. I hit a ball 315 yesterday on a straight par 4 with a strong tail wind no CP or anything. The question I have is how do you see how far it carries? It's real tough for me to see a ball past 290.
  3. I just reshafted my 60 degree wedge (some how after a bad shot the old shaft broke) and i left the shaft +1", I figure it will give me more room to tweak yardage by being able to choke up, down. Any negatives to doing this? I tend to use it between 80 and 60 yards, and flops and chips. I tend to use the whole length of the club when chipping but mostly chip with a sand wedge or p-wedge.
  4. Old Sycamore is good old layout, Skybrook usually has nice greens and tough approach shots. http://www.bman.com/golf/ Decent site with reviews.
  5. F_U_G_L_Y Let the fanboys flame. nuf said.
  6. I honestly never use my gps anymore, after a year I feel I know the courses quite well, but I'll give my .02 again. GPS Pros: Software+dongle for windows mobile phone with blue tooth: Allows you to cheaply add software+$60 gps dongle and have full GPS on your phone. Layup planning on some software Additional features, scorecard, stats, bets Cons: Looses signal Cost of maps can be $$$ depending on software Not quite as accurate Dedicated units feature locked. As far as range finder, I have now played a few rounds with people in the group who have one so I have a little more experience. RF Pros: Accuracy inside 180 yards Ease of use Nice to scope hot chicks. Cons Line of site needed Distance limited cost In the final picture I find I don't want to carry either. Inside of 150 yards with direct line of site the range finder is quite nice. Out of the fairway on a blind par 5, trying to figure out what will give you 150 in to the pin safely the gps is better. Guessing works pretty good too.
  7. I had a horrible round today, shot a 48, 42 with one bird, and only hit 5 greens. I was going a bit past parallel on my back swing and did not adjust correctly until around 14. If I had blades I can only imagine what my score would have been, but the additional frustration alone would have been at least 5 strokes. I simply don't have the mental game. Hitting the ball 1/4" towards the toe registers with feel, but not so much where the ball ends up. I like being able to adjust before losing strokes. I play the blues quite a bit and our south course is TOUGH, rated 73.9 with a slope of 138. The north is rated a bit lower however there is 13 drivable OB holes, and it is extremely tight. What does your course look like? Perhaps it is a bit more forgiving for missed shots and the blades do not cost you strokes. It would be interesting to see how you scored on your regular course with a set of "players cavity backs", you should see if you can demo a set for 18 and let us know what, if any, the differential is. I'm a big fan of the cg4 tours, they give great feedback. I have read the cg reds play great but look horrible, I am sure there are many opinions on what the best "players cavity backs" are.
  8. I looked up my stats on the golf digest challenge and my GIR average is 9, stats for the tour in 2005 were an average of %64.9. the challenge lists my long game handicap at 6. This brings up a good question or two... What is a good ball striker? How good a ball striker do you need to be for blades (how they improve your game via no forgiveness argument aside). I find that when I need to work the ball more than my current irons allow, going for the center of the green or hitting the more conservative shot is a better idea 99% of the time even if the clubs allowed me to attempt the shot. The percentages are so low I'm not sure it is worth it.
  9. The number of >10 handicaps I see playing blades is almost none, and the ones I have seen are horrible ball strikers. I'd advise a cavity back but not super improvement club but it seems like you already made up your mind. I made the switch to my CG4 tours when my handicap was still high and I think they will be a good fit for my swing until I get < 3. I average around 7 GIR per round and consider myself a good ball striker.
  10. i'm not looking for distance, only accuracy. I already suffer from inside of 120 yards, I'd rather not expand that range of finess swings.
  11. BURNER, a guy at my club hits an 8.5 xstiff 340+ I hit my 10.5 stiff 300 regularly.
  12. Ok, so I was reading some of the threads on shafts, and it got me thinking about if I may need to change my shafts out, according to "Shaft fit" on the true temper site I need stiff, but I hit my irons great. So the question is if it ain't broke do I fix it? As an example of a good round I shot an 84 today with 10Gir, hit 7 fairways, 36 putts. I play CG4 tours with regular flex/length/lie/grip. I don't tend to high high fades, more of a high draw 7i has 150yard carry, 3i has about 215 carry. From a cost benefit side I doubt spending a ton of money on black gold shafts will translate into more than a stroke, but my grips are wearing out so I may need to do that anyway. Thoughts?
  13. 1st in flight 92,84,82 won by one stroke.
  14. You need to ask about assessments, clubs that have never had one are desirable as it shows they have good management. They may have a current assessment, the club my house is on has one which is an extra 60/month and the course isn't that great. I jointed the club across the street which has two courses for less/month. I bought a condo which waived the initiation fee, and I rent out and make a little $$. Much better to spend the 12k on a real investment than let it sit.
  15. don't feed the trolls
  16. I've been on a monitor say that my swing with 102mph carry 279.

    Golfer's Elbow

get a quick look from a pro, if I swing wrong (chicken wing) i have some discomfort like I hit my funnybone. If I keep my elbow tucked close to my body I'm fine, but this is a one plane swing vs a two so if you are two plane it may be different.
  18. I think loft is great, I play an 11 degree loft stiff flex that can cut corners like crazy. I have a 44" shaft and regularly drive with roll 250-285 when the hole permits an 80-90% swing. I don't feel I am losing any distance because of loft but I'd be interested to see the results of my driver on a launch monitor. Last time my swing speed was measured and I was swinging well it was 102mph, last time I went to golf galaxy i couldn't get it beyond 95.
  19. I guess I did the impossible!!! Or virtually at least. I did quit my job in April, and decided to take the summer off. I've been playing 4-5 times a week. There is no way i would have improved this much working full time. As far as peaking I'm guessing I'm going to hit it very soon, and unfortunately the club championship is Sept 1-3 with the rough growing like crazy, and a tough setup I'll have to play as a 15 and I'm not sure I'll even get to net +4 by the 3rd round. If I can get my putting to keep improving I may have a chance to do well, but Saturday I shot a 41 on the front with 23 putts. Ball striking can only get you so far, and practicing your putting in 101 degree heat is not something I'm up for.
  20. Our handicaps are updated once per month, and about 2 weeks in I've dropped a stroke or two on my instant for the past few months and I haven't missed a score post and play very strict rules with Equitable Stroke for each post. date--Index 3/1 24.3 4/1 24.1 5/1 21.4 (swing revamp by pro) 6/1 19.8 7/1 18.8 8/1 16.1 instant 12.9 ( two 85's in a tourney this month stay for a year) Thanks for calling me a cheater though...
  21. Just to add a bit to the discussion, you can shoot consistently below your handicap but it takes a ton of work. I've dropped from 24.3 index 03/07 to my present instant index of 12.9. I post all my scores but have had a very steep improvement curve. Most people I play with don't call me a sandbagger and mean it because they've seen the improvement. We have people in our club who post in the 90's but show up for a tourney and post an 83, they win but the handicap never goes below a certain point.
  22. Well I've tried my best to digest some of what is written in here: http://books.google.com/books?id=nHg...r2JtO54xzcJ6FM It says that there is a curve on which the more open your club face is the more "slip" you will have and the less the effect friction will have on the ball as well as the smaller the "stick" time is. We need to know the coefficient of friction for a modern golf ball to plug into a formula to see what that curve looks like to give us the answer, but i'm afraid the question is more complex than I thought. BTW i found this by searching on "oblique impact" and friction. Oblique impact is more of what we are discussing, where one object is stationary.
  23. A Pool ball with spin hitting a rail has different things happening than a golf swing, however a pool ball striking another pool with no spin is a great analogy. I do find it odd that I cannot find anything using friction as a variable in equations describing elastic collisions in 2 dimensions.
  24. boogie from buried lie in the face of the bunker, about 1/4" square of the ball was visible. Should have taken an unplayable but I blasted it out and up about 2' chipped up and made the putt. Had 3 birds, but the sand shot was the best by far.
