  1. Looking at single studies is always a bit iffy but I recall similar ones done with some other african tribes and isolated populations(sherpa maybe?) When you think about it these tribes tend to live a lifestyle where they can go for extended periods at restricted calories. Now we know that has an effect on BMR and longevity by slowing the body down. Now in addition these people are quite active so they are likely in much better shape and their resting heart rates are likely again much lower and our bodies do get more efficient at dealing with workloads when we train for them. But again I think the key here is that we are talking about a lifestyle not something people do for a month or two. For strictly weight loss especially with the extreme overeating nowadays, youre completely right. When we talk about metabolism it seems that people often forget that theres more to it than just BMR. Our bodies simply work better when we are active. For an extreme example look at what happens to coma patients or people dealing with paralysis.
  2. It probably wasnt. Women have an inherently lower BMR and since she was of much smaller stature by your description its even less likely. In fact, I would go as far as to say there is no way you know the full story here as this is very much in line with the common misconceptions about metabolism that people often hold. BMR falls within very narrow parameters between comparable individuals and ignoring medical conditions. Its also very much dependent on lean mass. Here is a short article referencing 10 studies. You can find a lot more on this subject. Does metabolism vary between two people? Yes, metabolic rate (the amount of calories burnt a day) does vary between people. Most of the time, it isn't that much of a difference and isn't causative of obesity (where caloric intake and exercise are better predictors), but...
  3. Quite disappointed with the coverage available on The Open website. Seem to be only able to watch featured holes and featured groups are locked behind some sort of membership only available for UK. I think it used to be one of the better events for online viewers but definitely not this time.
  4. Some of the reasons why Im critical of this: 4 week periods are too short especially for beginners. Periodization doesnt seem to make much sense. Exercise selection is poor. The exercise progression between phases is very poor. Unnecessary amounts of work and not enough for some. Honestly its all a bit of a mess and overall just a bad program. There are plenty of proven programs out there. There are good exercises in there but just too much nonsense.
  5. This is definitely one of those things that is blown way out of proportion. Personally Ive only really seen this with bodybuilders and other weightclass athletes who at the end of their cuts become extremely lethargic and their bodies simply arent losing weight even at what are obviously extremely low calories for their size. Theres definitely a survival mode ther bodies go into but remember that this is really going into extremes and this sort of end of cut diet is not sustainable in any way. People who "dont gain weight" just simply arent eating. Ive done this so many times with people who say "they cant gain weight". When you start looking at their diets their calories consumed are always very reasonable. Compare that to people who claim they "gain weight easily" who in contrast eat way more than they think.
  6. Meh. Exercise selection is the examples is just bad...
  7. Youre technically right about the homeostasis but this really isnt a factor that most people will have to ever worry about. Generally speaking you have to go into pretty low bf% and diet extensively for the body to really start regulating your metabolism. One thought behind recommending diet and exercise is to maintain that metabolism as well. The way diet research gets interpreted nowadays is somewhat skewed. A very common phrase thats keeps getting repeated is along the lines that dieting doesnt work because you will just gain the weight back afterwards. But this is an extremely flawed analysis. Diets work. The problem is that once people reach their goals they tend to think they can go right back to the eating the same things they did before the diet. The issue however, is that this is likely again them over eating significantly. In reality when people finish a diet they should pull up a RDI calculator and not go over that figure.

Did you watch the actual interview before getting upset? You know the one where hes clearly joking?
  10. This sounds more like just a warm up rather than what I would describe as stretching. I dont doubt it working. In fact it sounds pretty good although a bit minimalistic .
  11. Light dynamic stretching after a round. Often some foam rolling aswell. Massages when necessary. Hot showers to loosen up the back. Cold packs for more persistent aches. I do this for a couple hours total. On/off for like 20-30 minutes at a time. Neoprene sleeves and wound wraps(the elastic reusable kind) are great for keeping the packs in place while watching tv etc. Painkillers are a last resort. If it gets that far Ill usually take 3*800mg ibuprofen and do appropriate rehab work. A max of couple weeks is usually enough for minor injuries. Having to rely on painkillers long term is a no no. Been there, done that and in the end it tends to come back and bite you...
  12. This whole thing is beyond pc gone crazy. After the suspension news I had to go back and read the transcript again incase I missed something. Nope still absolutely and utterly ridicilous. I hope one of the Lees takes it.

    My Swing (Alx)

Long time no updates. Took a few months off after last season. Didint feel like practicing having ended the season on such a low note. I also had a nagging pain under my left scapula that was really bothering me. Nothing more than overuse but note to self Dont let them get that bad... Taking such a long time off also allowed me to come back with some fresh thoughts and feels. At the tend of last year I was feeling kind off stuck with my thoughts if you will. Not sure if it actually effects anything but atleast I feel more free right now. Anyways... to the swing. Ball much further away, hands higher and much more space at impact. Better? I think? Cold day swing, cant wait for summer temps. Stance is a bit closed on these. My swing follows the leg line quite well. Not sure how to describe it but I feel like with a closed stance I can turn more freely without having to worry about yanking it left.
  14. Warming up is really important. Not just to actually warmp up but to calibrate yourself and see how your body is working that day. The very first time I played 18 holes I broke 100. At that point I had been playing golf for 4 months. Took me 2 more months to break 90 and a total of 10 months to break 80. It wasnt until the end of my 2nd year that I was in the low 80s every round. This season(year 2-3) Im breaking 80 consistently and shot my best round of 73(+1) a few months back. My home course is fairly tight and plays 6200 yards from the mens tees. On practically every hole a bad swing = lost ball with my distance so I usually hit an iron off every tee.
  15. Hey I was just telling you how to hit it further. If you wanna keep playing putt-putt or just making excuses why you dont even want to hit the ball far be my quest .
  16. As they should. Its an athletic feat that most people will never achieve. Mostly cause they are lazy and scrawny like op and refuse to hit the gym . (/s) ps. Last round I averaged 300 off the tee on my drives. I hit 3 drives and was 2 under on those holes. Did I mention it was meters?

    My Swing (Alx)

Ive been working on my woods recently. Really trying to get that AoA more up with the driver and just hit more drives in general. I generally dont need the driver or on the shorter courses so its really something Ive sort of neglected but I realize its what I have to do to shoot lower scores. Coming along pretty well. ps. Ive been hitting the ball really well recently. My irons have been on point and Ive gotten a lot of looks for birdie and even eagle putts. I havent made any eagle putts cause I cant putt for the life of me... but I did make a hole in one on the 170m par3 at my home course .
  19. Its a shame they dont appreciate the online viewers.

    My Swing (Alx)

Another round in the seventies today(77). Hitting only irons off the tee. Hitting the ball really well but my wedge distance control and longer putting are just terrible. Definitely something I have to start working on. So shockingly what Ive practiced is working well and what I havent isnt... Heres a comparison to the swing from the end of last year. A few pointers: -ignore the alingment stick, its doing nothing pointing at nothing -on the left my stance is more closed to neutral and on the right very open -ball position on the left is centre of stance and on the right more towards the lead foot -both shots are straight

    My Swing (Alx)

Trying to tone down the fade a bit. I tend to drag the handle through impact starting with mid irons and that leaves the face open. As I get to the longer clubs it can sometimes produce some impressive slices... Working on trying to let the club release a bit more with the longer clubs. Played my season best 9 holes the other day +1. Definitely the best 9 holes I have every played. I was hitting the ball so well, it did exactly what I wanted it to. Probably the best shot of the day was a beautiful 3 wood. From a downhill lie a perfect arrow straight shot. Kicked left from the front of the green and ended ping high at the edge of the green. Got a really unlucky lie with the ball infront of a dandelion tuft sigh. It was getting a bit dark so the frames are getting a bit smudgy. This was a baby draw.
  22. Ive gotten something similar when Ive done a alot of work infront of a mirror holding positions. Never really hurt when swinging. Could just be the tricep/shoulder getting iritated from being overworked/constantly streched.

    My Swing (Alx)

Ended up taking a pretty long hiatus from golf. I had a nagging back injury around the shoulder blade that I'd been ignoring for a while and at the end of last year it was starting to really effect my swing. I did see one of our club pros a few times during the winter so I had something to work on but I really tried to stay away from hitting balls to let everything heal properly. Been at it again for a few weeks. Ball a bit further away. Weaker grip. Trying to take the club back a bit more up than to the side, I feel like this is coming mainly from the grip change rather than me actually doing things different. Overall Im definitely hitting the ball better than ever.
  24. Are you an advanced lifter trying to target a specific weakness? If not this program is quite something...
  25. A. I was really expecting him to play it safe and just pat pat the ball around. Really impressed with how much speed he was able to generate and the swing looked so controlled. +1. Was just about to comment on this. If he was in pain I seriously doubt he would be playing and risking even further injury again.
