I've always liked Kelly Tilghman. Does anyone know what her role will be? I think we all knew DLIII wasn't going to work. Frankly, I wish someone would put Colin Montgomerie in the booth. I know many people don't like him, but he knows a lot about the game. Also, I enjoyed Frank Nobilo's comments on today's telecast.

You're right. My hole-in-one was a par three. I screwed up the math. I'll correct it. Well, I couldn't edit my original post. Sorry.

So basically my topic was merged with a post from eight years ago, correct?

How many of you have ever calculated your ringer score on your home course? Of course I mean converting the lowest score you have ever made on each hole to one 18 hole score. For instance over 36 years playing at MPCC here in Charlotte, I've made birdie on every hole, I've eagled three holes and have one hole-in-one. So my ringer score is -23 or 48 on our par 71 course. My guess is many of the better players on here might be in the low 40s or even the 30s. Another option might be to limit it to just this year. So far, my ringer score is -15 for 2020. I've birdied fourteen of our eighteen holes and made an eagle last Thursday (my first in nearly 20 years). I hope you all have fun with this exercise. Also, rest assured I'm not going to turn it around and calculate my "clunker" score which would probably be over 110.

Well I played again today and frankly after my 78 yesterday I fully expected to shoot in the 80s. Surprisingly, I shot 77. I cannot explain it but I'm playing like I did before my shoulder injury. I did switch back to my Mizuno JPX 850 forged irons. I was fitted for them five years ago, but I had been playing a set of "game improvement" Taylormade 2017 M2s. I putted well too and that always helps. Who knows how long this will last, but I'm going to enjoy it.

I finally broke 80 for the first time this year. I played with my son from tees measuring 6250 yards and a par of 71 . I made two double bogeys, five bogeys, ten pars and (wait for it) an eagle for a 78. At age 70, it's my first eagle in at least 25 years. Obviously, some luck was involved as my eagle was not a putt, but a 130 yard 8 iron. All in all it was a great day.

Great Lists. It's clear we have a lot of excellent courses here in the States. As a variation we could do a side question as to what are the best three you have played in the US. Mine would be Oakland Hills in Michigan, Pinehurst #2 here in NC and The Ocean Course at Kiawah in South Carolina. Oh how I wish I could add Augusta National to the list, but alas; I've never played there.

I'm talking about courses you've played, public or private. Also, I consider area to be within a 20 mile radius of where you live. I know golf publications always put out lists of what they consider to be "the best". I'm just curious as to what those who post here think. Remember, it's your opinion and you cannot be wrong.

I live in Charlotte and here's my list of what I think are the best courses here. #1 Quail Hollow Country Club #2 Charlotte Country Club #3 Carolina Golf and Country Club #4 Carmel Country Club (South Course) #5 Myers Park Country Club (My Home Course) What do you think are the best five in your community?

It's amazing how a thread about a fantasy Open Championship turned into a "here's who I hate" discussion.

I find DL III to be kind of bland too.He was a good player, but he just isn't very exciting on air. I really hope Colin Montgomerie will become a color analyst once he retires from the Champions Tour. I know some people don't like him. However, he knows the game and actually has a sense of humor.

What Would Your Home Course Rate on the Doak Scale?
Hoganman1 replied to HJJ003's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
My home course, Myers Park Country Club, in Charlotte is probably a 5 or 6 on Doak's Scale. I play it two or three times a week so I may be under rating it. It's always in excellent shape and has several great holes. It's just not as interesting as it was when I joined 36 years ago. It was a Donald Ross design that was restored by Rees Jones. Since then several different architects have "messed" with it creating a hodge podge of different styles. I still enjoy playing there and it's less than a mile from my home. However, Charlotte has at least a half dozen courses that are better. -
Shot 83 yesterday from our sliver tees (6256 - 70.4 - 128). Had a few putts only miss by a hair and made one double bogie. My goal is always to break 80. I've come close a few times recently, but haven't done it since last Fall. Our back nine is longer and more difficult for me, so I have to score in the 30s on the front to give myself a chance. I could probably move up to our 6000 yard tees at age 70, but I really like the challenge. We only have three or four par fours I struggle to reach in two shots.

I voted for 100* F. I like to walk the front and ride the back, but if it's around ninety and humid I'll ride all 18. If it's approaching 100* I probably won't play. One bonus to hot weather is at age 70, most of my aches and pains go away.

I recommend Footjoy Pro SLs. They come in wide and you should be able to find last year's model at a discount. I don't know if you can order from Dick's Sporting Goods in the UK, but they have them.

I started 2020 coming off a fairly mediocre year. I turned seventy years old in January and several injuries over the last few years really wrecked my game. However, as we reach the half-way mark of the year, things are getting better. I'm pain free for the most part, I've found a driver that has given me a few more yards off the tee and my short game is coming back. I've always been a good putter and that saves a few strokes every round. I used to be a single digit handicapper (as low as eight) just a few years ago. Now I'm a 12 and my goal is to get back to single digits this year. I know to do that I have to break 80 at least 30% of the time. Here's hoping I can make that happen. PS I'm playing a set of tees that are 6250. I know I could score better at 6000 yards, but None of my buddies want to move up.

I used to walk all the time. People at my club used to jokingly ask me if I knew how to drive a golf cart. However, age and arthritis caught up with me. I was able to walk 18 this Spring while golf carts were banned on our course. The cool weather really helped, but often playing two days in a row was a struggle. Carts are now allowed. My plan is to at least walk the front nine, but ride the back if it's hot or my knees are hurting. Our back nine has a couple of steep hills towards the end. Sometimes if I walk I'm so exhausted I don't play them very well. All that being said I still think golf is better when one walks.

Yes. Our club is private and we only have one course. We use an online system which opens at 8:00AM every morning for times one week out. Since the stay-at-home/work-from-home orders getting times is like getting concert tickets. So far my group of retirees has been able to get times and play several times a week, but it's been difficult. We're all hoping once people return to work availability will improve.

Bending Ping Eye 2 to Match Modern Lofts
Hoganman1 replied to Batchyyyyy's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I agree with most everyone else. I wouldn't try to bend them. It doesn't really matter what the loft of your seven iron is as long as you know the yardage it travels. -
We bet and for some reason at our course the handicap system doesn't work well when we play from separate tees.

I guess I play tees that are too long based on the chart. My average drive is 190 to 200 total yards, but my irons and fairways are longer than the chart. My group plays tees that are 6250. While I'm often the shortest off the tee, I'm usually in the fairway. Also, I'm pretty accurate and chip and putt really well. Although my buddies are longer, I often out score them over 18 holes. I just turned 70 in January. As I age, I will probably move up to tees that are 5800 to 6000 yds. Hopefully my group will move or I can find a new group.

Our course went to hybrid tees a few years ago and we were able to get slopes and ratings for all of them. For some reason we recently changed the colors at our course. No one with whom I've spoken knows why we did this, but our tips are green at 7124, black is next at 6605, Silver is 6250, gold is 5778 and white is 5263. The hybrids basically split the distances between the different sets of tees. I'm a senior and fairly short off the tee, but my short game is good enough for me to play silver (6250) and still score in the 80s. However, I struggled some this past Winter when it was cold and wet so I'll probably move up to the silver/gold hybrid next Winter.

This may have been covered before, but I've posted scores all through the COVID-19 course modifications. My rule is if I play, I post the score. I know some people who haven't done this. I'm not sure how much the shallow holes (or raised cups) affect one's scoring. I do think bunkers that have not been raked properly have made a minor difference for me. Also, walking and carrying affected my performance early on. I was so tired around hole #15 or #16, I didn't finish my rounds very well. After six weeks I've gotten in better shape and have actually parred 18, which is our most difficult hole, a couple of times. Carts are now being allowed, but I'm going to keep walking until it gets really hot. Anyway, I try to keep my index up to date on this site and the five others on which I post.

Yes, these have been around for many years. I once played in a church outing with a guy who had one. The round took forever as he had to adjust his club for every shot. I don't remember what his score was, but I'm sure he didn't break 100. It would be interesting to see how a really skilled player fares using one of these.

Most Forgiving Driver for a High Handicapper?
Hoganman1 replied to baseball28's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Here's another vote for Ping. Any of the G series would work. My advice is ti find a used G20 or G25 you can demo or several rounds. It might be easier to find a used G400 and they're good too.
