  1. I agree with Ernest. Some time in the future people will realize what Obama has accomplished with an opposing party determined to stop him at every turn.
  2. A very athletic swing for a newbie. Try to put more weight on your left side and work on flexibility. You will be beating most people in no time.
  3. I do not agree with the concept of "shorter back swing full swings." It is important to accelerate through the ball and avoid decleration. We can agree on that. The short swings, especially the 7:30 requires "dead hands." If you try your regular swing there is not enough time for most players to cock and uncock the wrists consistently. This is a revelation for me and I am now hitting short pitches around the yard to perfect this swing which has been missing for my whole career in golf.
  4. It would seem reasonable that a healthy person in their 60s should be able to reach a 412 yard par 4 in two shots. Maybe some resistance training with weights would help. Some people lose a lot of muscle mass as they age. Maybe a little better timing in the swing would help. Some golfers seem to swing mostly with the upper body as they lose flexibility.
  5. I believe nearly everyone faces lots of shots from under 40 yards, because even the good ball strikers miss 1/3 of the greens or more. Pelz came up with some good logical thinking with his idea of 3 different standard swings with the wedges and using 4 different lofts to create 12 different wedge distances.
  6. It's not how, its how many.
  7. Every school is different. The competitive kids on most teams shoot in the 70s consistently. You are not that far from being in the thick of the competition. Some people play best with some pressure and some do not do well at all. Best of luck and keep practising.
  8. Weight lifting and weight training are quite different. Muscles need resistance to stay in shape. I have done plenty of weight training over the years, but never really had an upper body until working construction for a couple of years during a recession. Now I am 65 and weigh more than I used to, so weight training is more important that ever. Maintaining muscle mass with ageing is one of life's biggest challenges. I am not as flexible as before but just as strong. The ball still gets launched most of the time.
  9. This reminds me of the old cartoon with two little kids playing golf. One kid says, "hey Billy I just shot a 42." "That's good, but what did you shoot on the last hole?"
  10. Sure why not. It is the direction golf is headed. No man's land used to be 80 yards in. Now there is a club and a swing for every distance.
  11. Swing for right center field. Find a ball with little spin and a Surlyn cover.
  12. Start by hitting a ball, standing on grass with golf shoes. Don't swing so hard and keep your balance and that will help a lot.
  13. Golf Digest has a decent article this month on how to answer this question. It is amazing how many amateur golfers, especially higher handicappers will spend a lot of money on clubs and green fees but "play whatever golf ball they can find" or buy used balls at a swap meet from the bottom of a lake.
  14. I do not like to play with a ball that starts with the letter "T" because they tend to get picked up. There are so many balls now it is hard to make a selection. Thanks for the post.
  15. If I had $5k to spend I would still buy used clubs. Technology is changing pretty fast and sometimes it is good to make a change. There is now a whole industry of used clubs. It is easy to look them and have them delivered to your door. Go hit everything in sight and take the advertising with a grain of salt. Equipment can only take you so far. Skill can take you anywhere.
  16. I was a kid in high school. It was a summer job.
  17. Hallowed ground. My first full-time job was greenskeeper at Congressional in 1966. I remember how precise they wanted the greens to be mowed. Hand watering the greens in the morning when it was quiet was a special thing. I got to play a few high school matches on the old course soon after. Ben Hogan and Deane Beman were household names in those days. We used to hit balls at Hogan's Driving Range owned by Ben's brother Larry, and he gave us free swing tips. I am happy that you had a positive experience there.
  18. Golf will be never be an easy game. PGA courses keep getting longer. The hole locations are nearly impossible for the average golfer. I do like to watch the Masters and the US Open especially though because the courses are so tough. It is an amazing thing to watch Tiger hit a putt from 20 feet that rolls off the green and is then 30 feet from hole.
  19. Thanks for the update.
  20. The subject is Arnie. He is a been a good will ambassador for the sport since the early 1950s. He is still with Winnie. He learned to fly a plane so he could be home more. His tournament in its 38th year. His children's hospital does some great work. That is my point and I don't care what other golfers are doing.
  21. You are amusing. Thanks for the two choices.
  22. Good thoughts by some smart people. Golf is hard, because on every hole you need big swings and little short twitch muscles. You have to use an arc like motion to make the ball go straight.
  23. If I play with my brother we might have a beer, maybe two at most. We live in different states so it is a big deal to get together. If I feel tense I walk faster. I will avoid the cart if necessary.
  24. zzzzzzzzzzzzz
  25. And Tiger can't keep his pants zipped and is a terrible role model for kids and adults alike. Hookers and drugs. His body is broken and he may be done. Before Arnold Palmer helped to increase purse sizes, pro golfers had a hard time making a living. Moe Norman used to sleep in his car.
